This 200km circular ride begins near Kharkhorin where there now stands an extensive Buddhist monastery at the place where Genghis Khan planned his conquests.
The scenery is remote and beautiful, the only inhabitants being nomadic families with their herds of horses, yaks and sheep. The landscape is quite dramatic, especially at the Orkhon waterfall which was created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago.
We ride with local people who will take care of the horses and delight in showing us their customs and country. The daily riding distance is approximately 30 km. There is full vehicle support throughout the tour.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to the hotel which is not far from the central Sukhbaatar Square.
Day 2: Jeep across the beautiful mountains and steppe of the central region to Kharkhorin. Overnight traditional ger camp beside the Orkhon river. (B) (L) (D)
Day 3: Jeep to Tsenkher village where the horses will be waiting. Start riding after lunch across a wide open river valley. Overnight camping. (B) (L) (D)
Day 4: Ride into the forested hills and over Bogooch pass (altitude 1800 metres) and to the former site of Tsenkher village. (B) (L) (D)
Day 5: Ride over the highest pass, Ultiin davaa (2200 metres altitude)and down into the lush green valleys below. (B) (L) (D)
Day 6: Ride along the Orkhon valley, crossing the river many times to reach the spectacular Orkhon waterfall. (B) (L) (D)
Day 7: Ride across the open hills, passing by Batulzii village. (B) (L) (D)
Day 8: Continue riding northwards following the Orkhon river, passing only a few nomadic families and herdsmen in these wild and remote mountains. (B) (L) (D)
Day 9: Ride beside the river to arrive back at Kharkhorin. Visit Erdene Zuu monastery, the original centre of Buddhism in Mongolia. (B) (L) (D)
Day 10: Jeep to Ulaanbaatar. (B) (L) (D)
