A visit to the Etosha National Park is one of the highlights of travelling Namibia. Etosha, which was declared a game reserve by the German kolonial administration back in 1907, covers an area of more than 22 000 sqkms. In its centre lies a vast saltpan surrounded by grass and thorn savannah, Mopane bushland in the west and dry forest in the north-east. About two million years ago, this area was an enormous lake, fed by the Kunene river.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1:
Drive from Windhoek via Dordabis - visit the oldest Karakul weavery of Namibia -, Uhlenhorst and Stampriet to the Auob Lodge. Lunch at Bitterwasser Lodge. Auob Lodge or Kamelruh Guesthouse (dinner/bed/breakfast).

Day 2:
Drive along the Auob River, via Koes and visit to the Kokerboom (quivertree)to Keetmanshoop, Canyon Hotel, for lunch. Proceed past the Naute Dam to the Canon Lodge. Canon Lodge (dinner/bed/breakfast).

Day 3:
Visit the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon of the world. This gigantic ravine, in places almost 500 metres deep, has been gorged out of vast undulating plain in the course of thousands of years. Proceed to Luederitz via Seeheim and Aus. This drive takes you through intriguing 'moon' landscape of endless desert vistas and bizarre rock formations. Lunch at Klein Aus Vista. Nest Hotel (dinner/bed/breakfast).

Day 4:
The day is spent in Luederitz. The first German settlement in Namibia, named after the merchant Adolf Luederitz from Bremen, who bought this area from the Hottentots in 1883. This small harbour town is perched on rugged black rock, offset by the deep blue waters of the bay, and is surrounded by bays, coves and fjords. During the morning visit to the 'ghost town' of Kolmanskop where diamonds were first discovered in Namibia. Afterwards sightseeing in and around Luederitz. Nest Hotel (fullboard/overnight).

Day 5:
Drive back through the restricted diamond area to Aus and the scenic Neisip Plain. Lunch en route. Afterwards drive along the awesome loneliness of the "Schwarzrand" to Hammerstein Lodge. En route visit "Schloss Duwisib", a fairytale castle built by Baron von Wolf in 1908. Hammerstein Lodge (dinner/bed/breakfast).

Day 6:
In the early morning depart to a excursion to the Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei, a large clay pan in the centre to the Namib Desert, surrounded by the highest sanddunes in the world. Be in time for lunch at Petrified Dune Lodge. Afternoon at leasure. Petrified Dune Lodge (dinner/bed/breakfast).

Day 7:
Drive to Rehoboth for lunch at the Oanob Dam. Return to Windhoek. Arrival in the late afternoon. Safari Court (dinner/bed/breakfast).

Day 8:
Drive via Okahandja, Otjiwarongo to Outjo for lunch en route. Proceed to the famous Etosha National Park. Game drive in the late afternoon. Dinner/overnight/breakfast at one of the three restcamps (Okaukuejo, Halali or Namutoni).

Day 9:
Full day of game viewing in the Etosha National Park, which is one of the major sanctuaries of wildlife in Africa. The area was proclaimed a game reserve as far back as 1907. The size of the park is 22 270 km and it consists mainly of grass and bush savanna. This type of landscape provides excellent opportunities for game viewing at the numerous waterholes or in the open countryside. In between break for lunch. Dinner/overnight/breakfast at one of the three restcamps (Okaukuejo, Halali or Namutoni).

Day 10:
The Etosha Pan which the park is named after, is approximately 6000 km in size. In the language of the Ovambo people, Etosha means "place of dry water" or "large white place". Game viewing drive after breakfast until late afternoon, with a break for lunch. Mokuti Lodge (lunch, dinner/overnight/breakfast).

Day 11:
After breakfast drive to Tsumeb, visit Lake Otjikoto and the Mine Museum. Proceed to Otjiwarongo, for lunch at the Otjibamba Lodge. Drive to Mount Etjo Safari Lodge, game drive in the afternoon. Exceptionally overnight might be in another lodge. Mount Etjo Safari Lodge (dinner/overnight/breakfast).

Day 12:
Return to Windhoek via Okahandja, the former tribal centre of Herero people. Visit the graves of the great Herero chiefs and the old cemetery with graves of members of the German Schutztruppe. Break for lunch in a restaurant. Drop off at accommodation of your choice.
