This is a fantastic mountain biking route located north of Ulaanbaatar in the provinces of Bulgan and Selenge. Travel by train to reach the copper mining town of Erdenet, from where we start riding into the remote and beautiful mountains. At first the trail is on packed mud tracks along valley floors, then over mountain passes on rocky trails through silver birch forests to reach the great Buddhist monastery of Amarbayasgalant. The average daily riding distance is 50 km. The area is inhabited mainly by nomadic people with their herds of horses and sheep. We will meet some families along the way and see their fascinating lifestyle, which has changed little in centuries.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to hotel to relax. Evening depart by train. Overnight on train in 4-berth compartments.
Day 2: Arrive Erdenet early morning to be met by the support crew. Assemble bikes and ride along the valley. Overnight camping. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 3: Ride alongside the Khojiriin river with mountains either side, then the valley opens out into cultivated fields. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 4: Ride through Inget village and up into silver birch forest. Descend to the Selenge river to camp. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 5: Ride through the village of Khyalgant, then over Sangiin pass and down into a fertile valley to camp.
Day 6: Follow the track along the valleys inhabited by many nomadic families. Cross a final pass to descend into the valley of Amarbayasgalant monastery. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 7: Spend the morning enjoying the beautiful monastery. Afternoon ride south to reach the main track leading to Ulaanbaatar. Includes: (B), (L), (D).
Day 8: Jeep to Ulaanbaatar city. Evening concert of traditional music and dance. Includes: (B), (L).
Day 9: Depart. Includes: (B).
