No citizen in the Middle Ages would have imagined that this road would become one of the most important holiday pathways in the future. The old trade route preserved its historical image and its romantic atmosphere throughout the ages.
Along the Lech on bicycle paths and small country roads, through quiet and charming landscapes near the Roman road. A bicycle tour for everybody. From Imst /Hahntenjoch 2000 m (transfer) to Donauwörth 400 m continuously downhill with short hilly passages. Approx. 300 km.
Your Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival to Innsbruck. In the evening tour information and issue of rental bikes at your hotel. Dinner and overnight at Innsbruck hotel. (B).
Day 3: Imst (approx. 65 km)
On the former Treidelweg (Treidel path) along the Inn and through small villages (churches worth seeing, old aristrocratic houses, fortress ruins) to Stams (baroque Cistercian convent, convent museum) on through Haiming to Imst. Day 03, Tuesday—Imst - Füssen (approx. 40-55 km) To Hahntenjoch (200m) by bus, via the “Fernpaß”. A wonderful downhill ride to Elmen and Lech follows.
The splendid mountain landscape, the mountain river and the town of Reutte get you into the right mood for a dream journey. The city of Füssen surrounded by magnificent peaks of the Alps and blue-green mountain lakes invites you for a stroll around the city (pedestrian zone, you see the outline of the Via Claudia). (B).
Day 4: Füssen - Schongau (approx. 45 km)
King Ludwig’s II fairy tale castles in Königswinkel – Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein – and at the valley station of the Tegelberg you should see the uncovered Roman thermal springs. The world famous Wieskirche (church) – the epitome of Bavarian rococo – is the next highlight. Through Steingaden and Peiting you will experience the highlights of the landscape and will arrive in Schongau filled with good impressions. (B).
Day 5: Schongau – Landsberg/Lech (approx. 40 km)
Schongau – former Bavarian boarder fortress – with fortified passages on the town wall that can still be accessed – gives evidence of the past. The splendid view over the Lech Valley promises greatness. Old part of town (Romanesque basilica with vaults), Hochenfurch, Epfach (the Roman Abodiacum, Roman museum) and Vilgertshofen (baroque pilgrimage church) are the places of interest before you reach Landsberg. Day 6: Landsberg/Lech – Augsburg (approx. 50 km)
You should see the medieval city centre of Landsberg/Lech – embedded in a wild romantic river bed of the river wit the same name – the historic town hall and the Gothic Bavarian gate. Through Kaufering am Lech to Königsbrunn (with the 11 km long, best preserverd part of theVia Claudia), into the old Bavarian duke city of Friedberg and on to the Fugger City of Augsburg. Numerous historic monuments from all epochs give the city its distinctive tone. The Roman museum is worth seeing. (B).
Day 7: Donauwörth (approx. 50 km)
On along the Lech canal to the pilgrimage town Biberbach and through meadow landscapes and Mertingen (Roman citadel Burghöfe) to today’s destination. The former free imperial city of Donauwörth offers an abundance of places of interest. (Mangoldfelsen, archaeological museum and the Käthe-Kruse puppet museum). The glorious imperial road with its stately bourgeois houses invite you to a stroll in town. (B).
Day 8: Donauwörth. After breakfast – individual departure. (B).
