The Uno Lodge offers some of the best hiking on the North American continent. Hikers along the rim have a captive view of the river thousands of feet below and explore caves with archaeological ruins, satellite sites of the Mogollon culture to the North.
Treks to a tented base camp at the canyon bottom are outfitted with pack burros and ascend the canyon to the Dos Lodge, another remote lodge. Less active travelers walk to a nearby steam with a waterfall and sightseeing in our vans enjoying the biological richness of this unique habitat with the world's most varied species of pines and oaks.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1 - Los Mochis - El Fuerte
Los Mochis airport transfer to El Fuerte and the Rio Vista Lodge
Day 2 - El Fuerte - Copper Canyon
All aboard on a morning train departure traversing the 8,000 foot ascent into the Sierra Tarahumara during optimum daylight (7:30am - 12:05pm) along the most dramatic and renowned segment of the Chihuahua Pacifico route. View spectacular scenery and experience the engineering marvel of the railway, with its 2.25 miles of bridging and 11 miles of tunnels! Your accommodations for 2 nights is the Uno Lodge. A 6 mile private road takes you to the Tarahumara owned ecolodge, the "Uno," with breath-taking and seemingly endless landscapes of canyons and mountains. From the lodge's secluded stretch of canyon rim property, gaze into the enormous gorge formed by the mile deep meandering river.
An afternoon walk through the dense forest around the lodge and along the rim will introduce you to this never-before-seen, pristine wilderness area, and the only panoramic river views of any lodging in the area. Visit with nearby Tarahumara families, cooperative owners of 60,000 wilderness acres and the lodge. You may choose your level of physical activity from easy to moderate walks or guided day hikes. Spectacular views of the canyon river bottom are seen from the dining room and other room windows throughout the lodge.
Day 3 - Copper Canyon
The Uno Lodge is perched at the very rim of a large promontory that extends into the canyon offering unrivaled 180 degree vistas. Participate in a walk to a nearby waterfall and study the biological richness of this major ecosystem, ranking high in biodiversity, including the world's most varied species of pines and oaks, and it's unique endemism of species found no where else. The tripod mounted powerful spotting scope is a very popular attraction in the dining area of the lodge.
Hikers will experience, what has to be, one of the most outstanding day hikes in North America viewing voluminous quantities of volcanic rocks folded over older Cretaceous and Sedimentary layers that have been deeply and roughly incised by the river erosion. Also explore a cave with a Mogollan influenced archeological dwelling, probably a satellite site to the great Paquime Civilization, in the northern part of the state. Enjoy evenings around an outdoor fire and under starlit skies miles away from electric lighting - lodge is solar powered.
Day 4 - Divisadero - El Fuerte (or to Chihuahua)
View and photograph the canyons from a variety of natural panoramic overlooks on a canyon rim drive as well as visit the Divisadero outdoor market, where other lodges are located. Hikers will trek to Divisadero. Observe local Indians weaving their aromatic pine-needle baskets in a myriad of designs before afternoon train to EL Fuerte (01:10pm - 6:00pm) and the Rio Vista Lodge. Afternoon train to Chihuahua City (12:30pm - 7:50pm) and a deluxe hotel.
