Summer and Winter
Summer offers a majestic landscape of recent resultant Volcanic activity. Lava flows, seething thermal vents, Hot and cold pools and lakes. There is a vast array of colors created from Sulphur, Aluminium, Silica, and many more mineral deposits released from within the Earth’s Crust.
Winter offers the opportunity to walk on Glaciers and snow- fields. All training and tuition is given on the day. “An experience to easily equal the worlds most famous Glacier walks.” All the sights of Summer without the crowds.

We start walking at approximately 9am. The walk takes approximately 6- 8 hours including 1-2 hours for breaks photo’s and Lunch.
We finish at approximately 5pm at the end of the Trek, where we are picked up and taken back to the Lodge by 6pm.
If there is the time and the inclination we can visit the local Natural Hot Springs for a well-earned private spa.
The Tongariro Trek brief description
The day Trek starts at the Mangetepopo Valley and gently winds it way up the west flank of the saddle between Tongariro and Ngarahoe. The first 1 and half- hours of the Trek is upward but gentle. The following 40 minutes is steep but it is neither difficult nor dangerous and we take it very slowly to ensure we all enjoy the spectacle and scenery.
We have now arrived at the South Crater, which after a rest and photos, we traverse to the start of the last climb for the day, up the side of Tongariro to the Famous Red Crater. This takes approximately 1 hour.
After taking in the view of the Crater in the foreground and the Otarere and Waiouru desert in the middle and background, we descend to the Emerald lakes where we enjoy Lunch refreshments and a well-earned break.
From here it is a 2- hour trek past the Blue Lake down to the Ketetahi Hut and Natural thermal area.
Finally a 2 hour walk down though the beautiful Native forest and rivers, which surround the base of these magnificent Mountains and we have finished...EASY!

Brief Itinerary for the “Northern Circuit"
The Northern Circuit is a circuit around Mts. Tongariro and Ngarahoe. Because it is a circuit it can be started from any point and walked in a clockwise or anti- clockwise direction.
The legs can be broken down as follows. This is the most common way I tend to go as it goes the opposite way to that which others chose to go (apart from the last 4 hours of the last day), and thus we usually get to enjoy only our own company.
Leg 1 Whakapapa Village through the Tama Saddle to the Waihohonu Hut approximately 6 hours. Passing the Tama Lakes enroute.
Leg 2 Waihohonu Hut to the Otarere Hut. Approximately 3-4 hours on the eastern flanks of Tongariro. This is a relatively easy day and is a either welcome rest after yesterday which some see as requiring an intermediate level of effort. We can rest and enjoy the leisurely passe or go exploring in the Otarere Desert where Fossilised charcoaled remnants of the forest destroyed by the great eruption of Lake Taupo in 186 AD, can easily be found.
Leg 3 Otarere Hut up to the Tongariro Crossing and North to Ketetahi. This is a 6-7 hour day where we climb up to the Red Crater on the Tongariro Crossing and then descend to Ketetahi, following the traditional Tongariro crossing route. This leg covers the famous scenery spots of the Tongariro Crossing including the Red Crater Emerald and Blue Lakes and Ketetahi Hot Springs.
The above route can change depending on the weather and individual needs or likes.
