All about the mushrooms of Pindos:
Our program runs in the heart of the forestal cluster of Aspropotamos, southwest of the Prefecture of Trikala, the beginning of the sink of flow of the river Aspropotamos. Based in a beautiful tower hotel built in a deep green forest by firs, chestnuts and oaks, in the region «Tria Potamia» of Aspropotamos we will spend 3 days learning all about the mushrooms of Pindos!
Trip Summary:
Day 1 - Arrive at the hotel and settle to your room. Driving time from Athens is about 4,5-5 hours. At 20.00 our mushroom specialist will give a slide show and speech about the mushrooms of Pindos. Afterwards we will enjoy a traditional meal.
Day 2 - From 9.30 am -13.30 pm. we will walk in the forest in order to identify, photograph and collect mushrooms together with our guide. We return to the hotel where we will enjoy our mushroom lunch (mushroom soup, mushroom pies and veal with wild herbs and mushrooms).
Day 3 - Free day and you can visit the region of Meteora, enjoy a rafting descent in Aspropotamos river or just wonder around the region.
Cherry lovers:
Ever tried greek cherries, cherry marmelade and cherry sweet ? Ever picked cherries and cooked marmelade? You can do so, and enjoy a wonderful holiday in the foothills of Mt.Taygetus. We will stay in a friendly top of the end guesthouse in a typical mountain village. Together with our host, Mrs Anna, we will go through the whole procedure of making cherry sweets from picking them up to storing them in vases.
Trip Summary:
Day 1 - Travel from Athens to Arna. Our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Athens and drive you to the village of Arna. (Driving time is about 3,5 hours). We will settle to our guesthouse and walk to the village square for our dinner. In the village square we will admire the biggest plane tree in Greece.
Day 2 - Cherry pick up and preparation. After breakfast we will drive to the estate of the guesthouse where we will pick up the cherries and wash them in the cistern. We return to the guesthouse where we will take out the kernels in the traditional way and make all necessary preparations for the next days cooking. In the evening we can drive to the picturesque fish village of Gythio (45 minutes drive from our guesthouse).
Day 3 - Preparation of marmelade and cherry sweet. Today we will learn how to cook marmelade and the typical greek cherry sweet. We will then can the products in vases and prepare labels. A perfect present for our friends back home. Early in the evening we return back to Athens.
