The Greek Gods made their home on Olympus. Not only the highest mountain in the country, Greece’s oldest and most carefully protected national park, also boasts the greatest concentration of flora and fauna, huge expanses of forest and the crystal clear waters of the Enippeas River. Above it all, soars the 2911m peak of Skolio (2nd highest peak) from where we, like Zeus, can survey the world.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Litochoro - Hiking to “Spileos Agapitos” Refuge. Meet at the village of Litochoro with your English speaking Trekking Hellas Guide. We will have a prompt presentation of the program and share info regarding the extraordinary National Park of Mt. Olympus. We drive up to “Prionia” Location (1.100m) where we will start hiking the great mountain. We walk though fir forests enjoying a variety of woodland birds and flowers till we reach “Spileos Agapitos” refuge (2.100m). Rest of the day off. Overnight. (Total Due time: 3h30)
Day 2: Climbing “Myrtikas” – Hiking to “Plateau of the Muses”. “Mytikas” peak (2.917m.) waits its daring visitors. We make our way up for our first conquest, “Skala” peak at 2.882 m., and continue our way on a well-defined route till we reach “Skolio” peak at 2.911m and optionally “Ai-Antonis” peak at 2.817m. A traverse leads us at the position where the climbing of “Mytikas” peak starts. With great caution we reach the highest peak of Greece and take a rest to continue our bold trip descending to “Plateau of the Muses” where “Kakalos” refuge appears (2.650m). In this small hospitable refuge we spend the night and regain strength. (Total Due Time: 5-6 hours)
Day 3: Hiking to Gortsia. We start early in the morning descending the great mountain back to Litochoro. We cross over the crest “Laimos” and thereafter, we overtake with great caution an acclivitous cliff to get to an immense balcony at “Skourta” location, 2.475m. We continue our way down till we reach “Petrostrouga” location and “Strago” spring. We follow the path on a slope till we reach 1.800m near the Cave of “Ithakisious”, a shelter in case of strong north wind and rainfalls. We are continuing by descending a natural path down to “Barbas” location and we finally reach “Gortsia” location at 1.100m (Total Due Time: 5-7 hours). Transfer back to Litochoro.
