Elephanting is a half-day programme that focuses on the relocated herds of this, the Pongola Game Reserve. Your time will be spent not only searching for, but more importantly, learning about our specific elephants, in terms of:
- Why the need to relocate, how this is done, what the aims for this are;
- History, what has happened since their arrival, present herd structure and bull activities;
- Learning about individual personalities, social standing and the unusual aspect of an orphaned group breaking in and how this affects the sociality of our lead cows Lizelie and Lisa;
- Future management plans, essential for these confined herds;
- How space for elephants was born and it's goals;
- How you, the general public can help us in giving our elephants their hearts' main desire - space.
Tracking on foot is at the guides' discretion, dictated by moods of the elephants, i.e. newborns, calves, bulls in musth. A BBC video on the relocation of our elephants from Kruger National Park is available for both Safari Lodge and Bush Camp guests.
Departure times:
Summer - 05h00 am and 14h30 pm;
Winter - 06h00 am and 14h00 pm.
Please, no bright clothing or children under 16 years.
