We meet at the Pumphouse Recreation Area, southwest of the town of Kremmling for this gentle one-day white water rafting float on the Colorado River through scenic ranch country and majestic sandstone, shale and Precambrian cliffs.
In the morning, you will raft through small rapids such as Needle Eye and Yarmony and stop for a quick dip in the natural hot springs. After a delicious smorgasbord picnic lunch, we can take a short hike to a set of petrified dinosaur tracks. A great gentle float for those that love rivers, but are not interested in big rapids. This trip is only offered to groups of 10 or more.
Tour Itinerary:
8:45 am: You will meet your guides at the Pumphouse Recreation Site. They will check you in and give you a pre-trip briefing. Next, the guides will outfit you in a Coast Guard approved life jacket and paddle. Your trip leader will give you a comprehensive orientation and safety talk with plenty of time for questions. You will have the confidence needed to handle anything that comes up during the trip.
We also have the option to bring along the inflatable kayak or “ducky”. Paddled with a two bladed kayak paddle, the “ducky” allows you to take on the rapids individually. Be sure and request this at the time you make a reservation. We have both one-person and two-person “duckies” available on our trips. After a short training demonstration for those interested in duckies, donning a helmet, you will be ready to take on the rapids of the Upper Colorado River.
9:30 am: Shortly after you launch, the river cuts through the vertical Little Gore Canyon, composed mostly of beautiful red tinted rock. The scenery here is some of the finest in the state. Once you enter the Canyon, Class II Eye of the Needle will challenge your paddling skills and leave you with a grin on your face. Just a short time later we make a stop at Radium Hot Springs – a natural hot spring pool. As the day warms, there are opportunities to splash fight with new friends or even swim a rapid!
12:00 pm: At lunch alongside the river, our professional guides will prepare hors d’oeuvres and a hearty deli-style lunch and may even tell a tall-tale or two.
1:00 pm: After lunch, you may elect to try out the “ducky” through Yarmony rapid, Class II at lower flows and Class III at high flows. Don’t forget to look around at the beautiful layers of rock peppered with green pines. There are many animals you may see along the way – deer, birds-of-prey, perhaps even a bear!
3:00 pm: Right above the take-out, we have the option of taking a short hike to some well-preserved dinosaur footprints in the sandstone.
3:30 pm: We will arrive at Rancho del Rio, our take out, load up the boats and take a short 25-minute ride back to the Pumphouse Recreation Area. Your car will await you and you can change out of wet river clothes.
4:00 pm: It’s time to say good-bye to new found friends and reflect on this gorgeous canyon trip. You may also choose to remember your trip with a T-shirt, hat or pair of shorts. There is no better way to spend a day!
