This multi-day, multi-activity expedition is available to physicians and other health care providers seeking an increased awareness of medical problems that are unique to the wilderness environment. With outdoor and wilderness recreation gaining tremendous popularity over the past two decades, the goal of this course is to teach both practical and theoretical skills to health professionals, search and rescue personnel, and interested lay people.

Physician credit is available.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 (August 29th) - Meet one of our small-plane chartered flights in Juneau for the scenic trip to Gustavus. On arrival in Gustavus you will be taken to the Glacier Bay Lodge to settle into the relaxed pace of life in rural Alaska. You can spend the rest of your first day beachcombing, going for a short nature walk, or sitting by the fireplace in the lodge. That night you will meet your Spirit Walker guides and the other guests on the trip over a nice dinner.

Day 1 (August 30th) - Wilderness Isles Day Trip

Our Wilderness Isles day trip departs from the Gustavus beach at 9am. This trip includes sea kayaking to the Pleasant Island Wilderness Area where you will get a chance to hike through incredible old growth rainforests, and have a nice picnic lunch on the beach. We will keep the groups small so everybody can enjoy a true wilderness experience. In the afternoon you will return to Glacier Bay Lodge for a CME seminar and dinner.

Day 2 (August 31st) - Baranof Wind Day Cruise.

The Baranof Wind is the boat that tours Glacier Bay National Park. This is the best way to see the entire bay in a single day, including abundant wildlife and several tidewater glaciers that often calve into the ocean. The tour leaves at 7:15am and returns at approximately 3:30pm. Lunch and beverages are provided on board. Upon returning to the Glacier Bay Lodge, there will be a CME seminar and dinner.

Day 3 (September 1st) - Today will be very flexible. If you have always wanted to kayak with the humpback whales or go salmon fishing this is your chance! Activity options at an additional individual cost include:

- Whales Day Trip – guided kayaking day-trip to paddle with the whales.
- Whale Watching Tour - on a local whale watching boat.
- Gustavus hike – with an experienced local guide.
- Charter Fishing Trip – on a local charter fishing boat.

Everybody will return to Glacier Bay Lodge in the afternoon for a CME seminar and dinner.

Day 4 (September 2nd) - Today is the start of a three-day wilderness lodge-to-lodge adventure. In the morning you will board our charter transportation for the scenic boat ride to Elfin Cove & Gull Cove. The group will be divided in half for the next three days.

Group 1 will spend the day sea kayaking and/or hiking in the vicinity of Gull Cove, where you will be spending the night at the rustic South Passage Outfitters lodge.

Group 2 will spend the day sea kayaking and/or hiking in the vicinity of Elfin Cove, where you will be staying at the Tanaku Lodge. You will also get the chance to explore the small boardwalk community of Elfin Cove, (summer population: 60, winter population: 1), which sits right at the junction of the Inside Passage and the Gulf of Alaska.

Day 5 (September 3rd) - Groups will spend the day paddling between lodges, exploring the coastal habitats and wildlife of the area along the way. You may want to take this chance to soak in the hot-tub at Tanaku Lodge or relax in the sauna at Gull Cove.

Day 6 (September 4th) - Groups will spend the morning exploring Gull Cove and Elfin Cove before being picked up by our charter transportation in afternoon for the return trip to Gustavus and the Glacier Bay Lodge for a final CME seminar and dinner.

Day 7 (September 5th) - The group will be divided in half to be flown via float-plane to Pack Creek for bear viewing today. You will get a chance to watch the large coastal brown bears fish for salmon in the creek and talk to Forest Services rangers about the unique management of Pack Creek - where bears and humans coexist in mutual harmony everyday of the summer without incident.

Group 1 will fly to Pack Creek in the morning for a half-day of bear viewing

Group 2 will arrive at Pack Creek in the afternoon for a half-day.

After watching the bears, each group will be flown to Juneau via float-plane where the trip will end.
