Teteven (415 m a.s.l.) is a small town situated in the Valley of Vit River among Lisets, Vasiliovska and Lestvitsa Mountains close to the Central Balkan Ridge. Monuments discovered accidentally prove that this area has been populated since most ancient times. The broadest Beech forest belt in Bulgaria, one of the vastest protected beech massifs in Europe, is to be found in the region of Teteven in Boatin Biosphere Reserve. Century-old woods, steep, in some places even vertical rocks, meadows, waterfalls, caves… these are just some examples of the landmarks, that could be found here.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Sofia Airport and transfer to the hotel in Teteven (1.45 h).

Day 2-7: Three trekking days with a local guide are included in the program, which could be spent on walking along the following routes:

1: Teteven – Ostrich Peak (1069 m a.s.l.) and back (4 hours)

The path starts from Teteven and goes upwards through small gardens and broad leaved forests, situated on the steep slopes of the mountain to Babintsi village and the peak afterwards. There is a nice panoramic view over the whole town of Teteven. This introduction tour gives also an idea about the every-day life of the locals and their means of livelihood.

2: Teteven – Cherven Peak (1221 m a.s.l.) and back (5 hours)

The path starts from the center of the city and goes through coniferous forest and grazing sub alpine grazing fields upwards reaching the peak itself. The peak is famous for its Karst structure, housing many pot-holes and small caves. Some extensions to the plateau areas of Vasiliovska Mountains could also be added to the tour this day.

3: Teteven – Morovitsa Cave – Glozhene Monastery and back (5-6 hours)

After a short transfer to the village of Glozhene (8 km from Teteven) a short trek expects you to Morovitsa Cave. The cave is one of the biggest caves of Bulgaria being 3 250 meters long and 150 deep. Primitive tools from the Late Palaeolithic, which are discovered in the cave, are now on exhibit in the Teteven Historical museum. The path from the cave continues through old Beech forest to Glozhene Monastery. Legend tells that the Russian Knyaz Georgiy Glozh, who fled here from Tatars, founded the monastery during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (13th century). Unlike most of the other monasteries, sheltered in the mountains, Glozhene Monastery is perched on a high stone terrace.

The other three days of the program could be spend on sightseeing or visiting some other places in the region of Teteven like the historical museum, the church “Vsiah Svetii” and the chapel next to it, the “St. Ilia” Monastery built in XIV century, the picture-gallery in the centre of the town, “Sueva dupka” Cave, considered as the most beautiful cave in Bulgaria because of its extreme variety of cave formations, the ancient houses - Bobevskata, Iorgovata and Hadji Ivanovata; Ribaritsa resort, Shipkovo resort (famous for its hot mineral springs), Troyan Monastery, Boatin Biosphere Reserve and many others. Biking and birdwatching extensions in the area (famous for its owls, woodpeckers etc.) are available upon request.

Day 8: Transfer to the airport for departure.

Accommodation and boarding: We stay at a small hotel in Teteven where all rooms are equipped with TV, bath/toilet. HB incl. in the price.
