From Paro walk through narrow agricultural valley and continue through a river valley that winds up and down the drainage. The trail gradually climb up. At high mountain pasture you meet yak hearder. They live in tents made from yak’s hide and stone houses. The view of the Himalaya is rewarding. Visit base camp of Chomolari (4150m), fort at Lingshi Dzong (4150m) and make a day excursion to the base of Jichu Drake peak (6974m). It is possible to see musk deer and blue sheep. Trail condition and weather will determine route of your return journey. It can be either same route or via Yali la , a pass of 4820meter, to Shodu (3963m) and Barshong (3785m) that descend to meet the main trail to Thimpu chu (river). This trail is bit tedious though it terminates at Thimpu.
Stay one more night in Thimpu to take a day trip to Punakha (1350m) through high pass at Dochu la (3100m) and Wangdi Phodrang. Next day take a half day tour of the capital to completes your journey to Druk Yul. Return to Paro and fly to Kathmandu.
This is probably the best trek in Bhutan. Late Autumn and winter are not good due to heavy snow condition.
Day
1. Fly to Paro (2134m). Transfer to Hotel
2. Full day sightseeing of Paro. Visit Drukgye Dzong and Taktsang monastery
3. Tiger Nest). Overnight in Paro.
4. Trek-Paro to Shana (2800m).Transfer to Drukgye Dzong. Walk through narrow agricultural valley. You come across several houses and villages. Camp beyond an army camp.
5. Trek-Shana to Soi Thangthangkha.Continue the journey through the river valley. The trail winds up and down the drainage. Camp is at a meadow with stone shelter.
6. Trek-Soi Thangthangka to Jangothang (4040m).Gradually the trail continues to ascend. It pass through an army post. The snow capped mountain view begins to unfold all around. As the trail reach higher elevation you meet yak herder and their stone huts. Walk further towards the base of Chomolari, camp near the ruined fortress.
7. Trek-Jangothang (4040m). Hike to Chomolari base camp.
8. Trek-Jangothang to Lingshi (4150m).Visit remote fort of Lingshi Dzong. There is great view of mountain and yak pasture. You may meet yak herders living in their tent make from Yak's hide.
9. Trek-Lingshi (4150m).Take a day excursion to the base camp of Jichu Drake (6974m). Musk deer and herd of blue sheep can be seen. Day 9-12 Trek-Return same route to Paro.
There is an alternate route via Yali la, 4820m pass to Shodu (3963m) and Barshong (3785m), that descend to meet the trail to Thimphu Chu (river). The trail through the drainage of Thimphu Chu winds up and down. This alternate route is a bit low point on this trip though it follows different route. Transport waiting at Bodina or Paro drives you to Thimpu. Stay at Hotel.
13. In Thimpu (2286m) Drive to Punakha (1350m) through high pass at Dochu la (3100m) and visit Wangdi Phodrang en-route . Half day tour of Punakha. Punakha was winter capital of Bhutan for 300 years. Return to Thimpu.
14. Thimpu to Paro (55km).Full day sightseeing of Thimpu. Visit national library, handicraft emporium, and memorial chorten of His Late Majesty, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk and short drive to dechenchholing to see gold and silver smith at work.
15. Transfer to airport. Fly to Kathmandu or onward.
