Your guide will relate information about the town's unique past, from its early Gold Rush Days to the devastation of Old Town Valdez destroyed in the 1964 Earthquake. Wildlife highlights on the trip include up-close encounters with curious sea lions, shy harbor seals, sea otters and marine birds. This tour is ideal for travelers with limited time in Valdez, cruise ship passengers and children of all ages.

Your Itinerary:

Meet at our office for a pre-trip safety briefing, equipment fitting and a short paddling lesson. After launching from the small boat harbor we spend the next several hours paddling around Duck Flats and Old Town Valdez. You will visit the Mineral Creek Islands, home of black oystercatcher and arctic tern nesting sites, see harbor seals hauled out on rock outcropping and bald eagles nests in the adjacent Sitka spruce forest. Duck Flats is a bird watchers paradise, a nursery for juvenile salmon, nesting ground for mallards, galdweall, widgeons and teals, and an important destination during spring bird migration. Our journey continues to Old Town Valdez where your guide will give you a short history of the town, Gold Rush and the 1964 earthquake. After 21/2 to 3 hours of leisurely paddle we return to the Small Boat Harbor.
