Day 1 - Cairns to Cooktown. We travel via Mareeba, Mt. Molloy, Mt. Carbine & the gold rush region of Palmer River through the rich agricultural land of Lakeland Downs, then enjoy a picnic lunch under some big shady trees possibly trying the very tasty local coffee. We then head towards Laura, to explore the Quinkan Area which includes a short walk to view the Aboriginal Rock Art Galleries at the area known as Split Rock. An afternoon run into Cooktown viewing some beautiful scenery, with large tidal rivers and possibly a crocodile.
(L/D). Hillcrest Lodge.
Day 2 - Cooktown - Cape tribulation. After a hearty breakfast we spend most of the day exploring historic Cooktown, visiting the recently revamped historic museum, which shows history of the Aboriginals, Captain Cook and his ship The Endeavour, early pioneers like gold prospectors and the 30,000 population of chinese that once lived there. From Grassy Hill Look-out, we view the surrounding township and countryside, whilst contemplating the task Captain Cook had in negotiating the reefs when he arrived in 1770. Driving south we stop at the amazing Black Mountain area, then call in at the rustic Lions Den Pub. (B/L/D) Mungumby Lodge.
Day 3 - Cape tribulation to Cairns. A picturesque trip through the Cedar Bay National Park ranges, exploring the magnificent Bloomfield Falls then crossing the mighty Bloomfield River. On down the scenic 'Controversial Road or Bloomfield Track', through the Cape Tribulation National Park now listed with the United Nations on the World Heritage Listing. We enjoy a walk & a swim (seasonal) at Cape Tribulation beach, further on for an informative National Park boardwalk, calling into Lync Haven for a chance to pat or feed a kangaroo.
