Mount Cook National Park is in the location of New Zealand's highest mountains. The most dominant being Mt Aoraki/Mt Cook (3754m) and Mt Tasman (3497m). A climb of either mountain will be 6 days in duration thus enabling the best chance of success. The guide:client ratio is 1:1 because of the severity of the climbing.
Aoraki Mt Cook
The most popular and standard route on Mt Cook is the Linda Glacier route / North East arete. This trip leaves from the Plateau Hut and follows the Linda Glacier, Linda shelf and then onto the North East arete via the summit rocks to the summit. This trips starts with a ski plane or helicopter flight to the Plateau hut on the eastern flanks of Aoraki Mt Cook. This option is 6 days in length. This allows for acclimatisation, training and adverse weather. The ratio is 1:1
Mt Tasman
Mt Tasman is the second highest peak in the country and in many ways the technical and aesthetic equal of Aoraki. It benefits from a longer duration of the season during which conditions are at the optimal for a successful ascent. Where conditions can forbid attempts of Aoraki/Mt Cook sometimes from the latter parts of January on, Mt Tasman will often still be in very good condition through to late March (especially from the Western side, or the North ridge) The timeframe and costs are the same and you can expect the personal commitment and length of the summit day to be very similar to Aoraki/Mt Cook. This is a mighty mountain. Not included in the cost is air transport, this is a variable that our guides are expert at shopping around and linking in with others etc. Other truly classic climbs also include Mt Aspiring, Malte Brun and other classic 3000m peaks. Arrangements can be made to make ascents on other spectacular peaks or combinations as you wish. It's your trip, let us know what you'd like to do. On some peaks such as Aspiring or Malte Brun when can guide a 1:2 ratio.
Notes:
Airfare is not included in the tour price.
This includes mountain guide fee, food and fuel, hut fees, DOC permit fees and 12.5% GST. Aircraft access is not included. Aircraft access prices can vary on a day to day basis depending on number of flights going into the Plateau area. Cost sharing is a definite possibility.
