The perfect complement to a safari is our dhow trip around Lamu Archipelago. Fly straight into remote Lamu, the centre of East African Swahili culture, where you will be met by our dhow to cruise tropical islands.
You can relax as the dhow sails along and soak up the sun, sea and culture. The area is protected from the sea, therefore safe to sail in most seasons. The island of Pate offers Swahili ruins to visit, or a Muslim boat-building village. Kiwayuu is sparsely populated and has great snorkelling, beaches and swimming, as well as tree houses for a night ashore. Our last island, Manda Toto, is deserted and also great for swimming and snorkelling. Everywhere there is birdlife in the mangroves and sealife – turtles, dolphins, whale shark. We might even catch some fish to eat. A beach holiday without the boring bit.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1 - Fly into Lamu midday and be met by the boat to offload bags. Cross over to Lamu for a walk through this fascinating Swahili World Heritage Site. There is only one car and transport is by donkey and dhow. Walk along the seafront to Shella and cross over to Manda Island for the night. You can sleep on board or in tents.
Day 2 - Leave early to sail through the Mkwanda Channel, inside Pate Island to visit Kizingitini, a remote Muslim village on the north shore, which is the dhow building centre of Kenya. Cross over to Kiwayuu and watch the sun go down from your treehouse on the beach.
Day 3 - An early morning hike up the conical hill to see the sunrise over the Indian Ocean, and Kiwayuu's deserted beach. Then a short cut through the mangroves to Mkokoni, a friendly village opposite the northern end of Kiwayuu, where you can sleep on a platform for the night. Great snorkelling in the Marine Park just off the unspoilt beach,, swimming, and a WWF turtle project.
Day 4 - Sail outside Pate if possible south to Manda Toto, to camp on a deserted island for the night.
Day 5 - Return to Lamu for a night or direct to your flight at midday.
