We’ll explore the Friulian countryside dotted with vineyards, olive groves, charming villages, and forests, Slovenia’s beautiful landscapes abounding with majestic waterfalls and spectacular water pools created by the emerald-green Soca river and Austria’s alpine trails offering stunning views of the Carnic and Julian Alps. Walking through all types of terrain - hills, meadows, forests, gorges and mountains - the hike is considered easy/moderate. You’ll stay as guests in family run accommodations in direct contact with three different cultures.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Welcome to Friuli

Arrival at Trieste airport or Udine train station and transfer to your accommodation in Cividale del Friuli. Hotel check-in and free time to explore the surroundings.

Day 2: Friuli - a land of vineyards

Breakfast. Guided walk in the Colli Orientali hills scattered with vineyards and olive groves. Stop along the way to visit a winery and taste a good vintage before returning to Cividale, a real gem in the eastern foothills of Friuli with a glorious past. Founded by Julius Caesar around 50 B.C., it was then invaded by the Lombards that left many traces of their presence in town. The Lombard temple, a fine work of the 8th century in Italy, is just one of them.

Day 3: Monte Matajur - a balcony over the Julian Alps

Breakfast. Guided hike on Monte Matajur, in a mountain environment, full of karst phenomena, colorful alpine flowers and vast views ranging from the highest peaks of the Julian Alps to the Adriatic sea. Transfer to Kobarid (Slovenia).

Day 4: Slovenia - following the trails of history

Breakfast. Guided hike along the town's historic and naturalistic trail which allows to rediscover the turbulent past of this ancient village, from Roman times to the Great War. Today Kobarid is sadly world known as the place where the greatest highland battle in human history took place during World War I. Today Kobarid is a pleasant town surrounded by towering mountains and offering many points of interest, including the Kobarid Museum, voted Best European Museum for the year 1993, or the beautiful Soca river where you can practice many watersports such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, etc.

Day 5: Tarvisio - the land of violins

Breakfast. Transfer to Tarvisio along a scenic route along the emerald-green Soca river, the Slovenian water jewel, considered by many one of the cleanest and most beautiful rivers in Europe, if not the most beautiful of all. Guided hike in the splendid Tarvisio spruce forests producing the precious tone wood, used to build the best violins, and along the Fusine lakes trail surrounded by the imposing Mangart mountain.

Day 6: Austria - the Dobratsch Natural Park

After breakfast, we leave Tarvisio, pass the Austrian border and head north to explore the Dobratch Natural Park in the Villacher Alpe. An easy hike takes us to one of the most scenic peaks in the Gail valley, from where you can admire the beautiful Carinthian lakes and the typical morphologies created by the glaciers during the last glaciation inside a natural park. We'll reach one of the highest chapels in Europe in a splendid alpine setting. In the afternoon we'll visit the town of Villach with free time for shopping.

Day 7: Italy, Austria and Slovenia - The Three Borders Peak

Breakfast. Ascent of Monte Forno or Three Borders peak, so called because it's on top of this mountain that the borders of Italy, Austria and Slovenia meet. It's also the place where the Friendship Festival of the Three Countries takes place every year.

Day 8: Departure. Breakfast and transfer to Udine train station / Trieste airport.
