Taormina is a famous, typical village in Sicily with fantastic view to the sea. It offers lovely side streets, nice cafés, cosy shops and cultural places of interest. Here we stay for the first three days, and discover the beautiful surroundings by our taxi or bus.
Your Itinerary:
Day 1, Saturday: Your arrival.
With your own car, ferry or plane to Catania. From the airport with an organised taxi-transfer (or the local Giammona -bus) to Taormina. Overnight and dinner in our nice, traditional hotel in Taormina.
Day 2, Sunday: Monte Scuderi
By taxi towards north to Ali Terme and to the small mountain village Fiumedinisi. From here a walking tour to the summit of Monte Scuderi (highest peak of the Peloritani mountain range). Possible crossing of the Monte Scuderi and descent to the mountain village Mandanici. Lunch stop in the local tavern Il Cacciatore where you can taste exquisite, home-made maccheroni or rabbits. Transfer back to the hotel (eventually with a bathing stop in the sea of Taormina .
Day 3, Monday: Alcantra Valley
To the fertile Alcantara Valley along a crystal clear, cold stream. Exploration of the Basalt gorge. By car of by bus to Roccella Valdemone. Hiking tour through the National Park of the Malabotta wood up to Mount Castelluzzo, and further on to Malvagna. Tip: stop at the tavern Gaggi in order to enjoy typical, Sicilian cuisine. Back to Taormina.
Day 4, Tuesday: Ätna
One of the highlights in Sicily is definitely the climbing of the volcano Ätna. Far away from crowded tourist places, the hike offers a wonderful experience in different vegetation, cultural landscapes, breath-taking, natural and geological wonders. The hike starts at 2700 m above sea level and ends after 600 m of ascent on the top of the volcano with the amazing view down to the huge crater and the whole island. After a long descent we reach Piano Provenanza.
Day 5, Wednesday: Island Lipari
Transfer to Milazzo by taxi and to Lipari by ferry. Check in the hotel, sightseeing.
Day 6, Thursday: Island Salina
To the twin island Salina by a speedboat. After 900 m of ascent we stand on the top of the summit Salina : breathtaking views over the whole archipelago. Bathing possibility after the tour. The island is also famous for its unique wine, salt and capers. Back to Lipari by speedboat.
Day 7, Friday: Lipari – Stromboli
First, we ramble about the city and have the opportunity to visit some interesting, cultural places, e.g. Castello Normanno with the archaeological museum. After lunch we head for the island Stromboli . After the ascent of 1000 m we are on the summit and have the opportunity to enjoy the fantastic play of colours of the setting sun high above Stromboli ! Later, at the falling night, a romantic spectacle will please our eyes: the glowing flow of lava out of the Stromboli. Equipped with lights we descend to the port where a delicious fish dish waits for us. We may reach Lipari about 2 am.
Day 8, Saturday: Departure to Catania by ship and taxi.
