Depending on the conditions, the group will also decide on a dive plan and dive site. All diving on Aliwal Shoal (the most famous dive site from this region) is done on Semi-Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), but don’t worry, all boats and skippers are Department of Transport approved and have all the required safety ratings, training and experience.
Tour Itinerary
6:30am
We pick you up from your accommodation and transfer you to the Dive Centre at the Scottburgh or Umkomaas launch site on the South Coast. The trip duration is approximately 30 to 45 min depending on location of your accommodation. En route your driver/guide will brief you on the diving procedures, the expected dive conditions and check your diving qualification and experience.
7:15am
On arrival at the Dive Centre, we will prepare and check your equipment with you, meet the other divers and the Dive Master. The Dive Centre may check your dive certification again and ask you to sign an indemnity form. The Dive Master will give a group briefing on the diving and emergency procedures and assign you a buddy if you are alone. Depending on the conditions, the group will also decide on a dive plan and dive site.
8:00am
We launch the boat from the beach launch site. All diving on Aliwal Shoal is done on Semi-Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), which are launched through the surf zone in order to reach the dive site. Hold on tight because this can be more fun than white water rafting!
There is no need to worry though, as all boats and skippers are Department of Transport (DOT) approved and have all the required safety ratings, training and experience. Depending on the water conditions, the trip to Aliwal Shoal, which is 5km offshore, will take between 10 to 20 minutes.
8:30am
Dive on the famous Aliwal Shoal. All dives are conducted as drift dives with the Dive Master trailing a surface marker buoy as a reference for the boat and divers.
10:00am
Return to launch site and Dive Centre. After the dive debriefing, you can enjoy a light snack before your next dive at 12.00 noon or you can have a filling breakfast and return to Durban at 11.00am, arriving back at your accommodation at 12.00 noon. If you do second dive, your expected return time in Durban will be approx 3.30pm.
