Ahhh, now we are getting down to the meat of it! What life on board a sailboat is all about. Again, it all comes down to crew since everyone has different expectations. Some people are happy simply to find a quiet harbor to fish, drink pina coladas and watch the sunsets. Other people prefer to be active looking for new adventures each day.
A typical week goes something like this - I sometimes pick up my friends who are flying in, or sometimes we just meet on the boat. The first thing we do is crack open a chilled bottle of champagne to wash down 2 pounds of shrimp and talk about what we want to do. A lot of times our trip hinges on which way the wind is blowing. We will probably want to cast off and head to Miami for the night and go to Bayside, Coconut Grove or the infamous South Beach. These are all unique party places with numerous bars and nightclubs which I'm sure you've all heard about. Then we might want to get away from civilization and sail south to the Keys to explore islands and reefs.
We normally plan our daily recreational activities over a large leisurely breakfast. We may decide to spend the morning sailing or windsurfing, or else we may want to set up camp on some deserted island and snorkel the nearby reefs. Fishing is a constant pasttime. When the wind is good, we lay on the beach and fly a kite. In other words, you never know what pleasures each day will bring. Dinner is usually a long affair starting with cocktail hour and snacks while socializing with people on other boats.
Then we settle down to a feast often caught fresh from the ocean - lobsters and fish are common when in season. After dinner - if we are anchored out - we have a bonfire on the beach or laze away in a hammock to watch the stars. If we are in a marina, we visit people on other boats or go to the local island club for reggae and dancing. Life on the Island Rose is camping out in an exotic milieu. Everybody gets involved in the daily fun and forever remember this trip for a long long time.
The Island Rose is one of the best equipped sloops of her size cruising the Bahamas and the Florida Keys. I take pride in the way she is outfitted. She has dockside A/C in all cabins and fans over every bunk. The entertainment center has a color TV, VCR, stereo with cassette and CD player. I have a good selection of tapes, CDs, books and games. I keep an ample supply of snorkelling gear and fishing tackle.
Of course, the boat has state of the art electronics like Global Positioning System, Loran, autopilot, VHF radio, 2800 watt power inverter backed by 3 banks of batteries! What's more, my galley is a dream - I have an excellent refrigeration system with deep freeze and it's also equipped with a microwave, toaster, blender, juicer, coffee maker, barbecue grill, etc. Fresh sheets and towels are well supplied. The cockpit has a Bimini top and side curtains so you are comfortable in any weather. The vessel is also equipped with a 15' inflatable tender with a 15 HP Mariner and with only a 4 1/2 draft, she is the perfect boat for cruising the shallow waters of the Bahamas or the Florida Keys.
