Walnut forests of the southern Kyrgyzstan are unique. Territories covered with these relics are reserves, and the Sary-Chelek national park was organized in 1960 on this place where the walnut and apple-trees forests are mixed with fir and silver fir woods. It’s situated on the southern slopes of Chatkal range in the basin of Hodja-Ata river from the foothills steppe to the snow-covered peaks.

Number of flora spices of the national park exceeds 1000 ones. Among them there are 150 spices of trees and shrubs, including such rare and precious as walnut, Nedzvetski apple-tree, Regel pear-tree, Persian rowan-tree, Semenov silver fir, abelra, atlatunia, ekzohorda, cherry-pleem, grapes and many others. These are about 160 spices of birds and 34 spices of mammals. Among them there are animals presented in the Red Book: snow leopard, Central Asia lynx, Tien-Shan bear, golden eagle, falcon and others. But the most impressive is the number of song-birds here: nightingales, yellow buntings, warblers, tomtits and others.

The plateau, which is situated in subalpine zone of the national park, is the memorial of ancient geological catastrophe. The natural dam of 15 sq. km. around the Sary-Chelek Lake was formed after the crumbling of two ranges. The obstruction dammed the river forming the Sary-Chelek Lake. Breaks of the ranges and hollows on the gigantic obstruction were filled with water. They formed six lakes which shores are covered savannah – like verdure. Thousand years old archas mount over two meters high grass of prangos and ferula. Above the lakes, on the primary slopes of Chatlkal range, there is alpine zone with severe Arctic climate, long winter, with snow storms and avalanches.
