The Far North is a walking and camping tour of New Zealand north of Auckland. Plenty of swimming and snorkelling in secret coves of turquoise water, and lots of great day hikes. It is also a bit warmer in the 'winterless North'. Highlights include; the remote forested coastal hike on day 1 and 2 near the Bay of Islands, open coast kayaking at Whangaroa, two nights of isolated camping at the very tip of New Zealand, and driving along 90 mile beach and Te Paki.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Drive north to remote eastern Bay of Islands. Explore beautiful coastline with sandy beaches and pohutukawa trees. Chance to snorkel in rock pools. 1-2 hours hiking
Day 2: Hike over bush saddle to secluded inlet and whaling station ruins. Climb Pukehuia for views of Bay of Islands. Ferry to Paihia and camp by beach. 6 hours hiking
Day 3: Kayak ($89) around sandy bays with rocky outcrops and volcanic remnants. Relax in coastal town for dinner. 4-5 hours kayaking
Day 4: Drive Ninety Mile beach and try sandboarding at Te Paki's big dunes. Set up camp, then hike to Cape Reinga for sunset. 2-4 hours hiking
Day 5: Explore coastline and hike through dunes at Cape Maria Van Dieman. Drive south to camp at Waipoua, home of Tane Mahuta, New Zealand's biggest kauri tree. 3-4 hours hiking
Day 6: Walk through Trounson Kauri Park mainland island where threatened native species are preserved. Return to Auckland. 1 hour hiking
Note: Tour is subject to tide times and sea conditions and may happen in a different order than stated above. Xmas peak time you may stay at different campsites on nights two and three. Far North vehicle has snorkelling gear, boogie/sand boards and barbecue.
What to Take:
- It's warmer up north
- Thermals and warm hats are optional
- Hiking shoes (rather than boots), and 2 season sleeping bags are OK too
* Due to limited space in this vehicle please keep your gear to a minimum.
