This biking vacation in Portugal is ideal for beginners as well as cyclists with some experience. This cycle tour in Portugal will follow coastal regions before heading inland through undulating scenery. Outside of the summer months this region is little explored making this a wonderful location for you cycling tour. This cycling holiday is available as a seven night self guided level 1-2 cycle tour and is an ideal first tour.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Transfer from Faro / Lisbon airport to the Guest House in Vila Nova de Milfontes "Casa da Eira".
Day 2: Milfontes - Zambujeira easy 33 km with extra loop of 9,5 km if required
After breakfast the tour meeting will take place handing over bikes and discussing the tour with our Representative. The route passes over the river Mira on the E.N. 393 then heads off on a wide sandy track to cross the E.N. 393 again to the fishing village of Almograve where lunch can be taken - fresh fish in the restaurants or a picnic on the beach. The route continues on past the lighthouse at Cape Sardão with its spectacular cliffs with nesting storks past the fishing port of " Entrada da Barca " and into Zambujeira do Mar to spend the night in the Guest House " Onda Azul ".
Day 3: Zambujeira - Aljezur 33 km
The route continues south over the beach of Zambujeira on a wide sandy track to the beach at Carvalhal. A steep climb into the village of Brejão and on minor metalled roads dropping down into the town of Odeceixe on the Ceixe river estuary with its spectacular beaches. A good place to stop for lunch.
A steep climb follows out of the town and minor metaled roads with little traffic meander through the village of Maria Vinagre and onto the Algarvian Moorish town of Aljezur with its castle. The night will be spent here in another friendly family run Guest House.
Day 4: Aljezur - Monchique 33 km harder riding
From Aljezur the route begins to climb across the hills of the Algarve with the landscape and flora changing from the coastal meadows to the cork oak and eucaliptus of the interior. Marmelete or Casais villages make good lunching places to gather energies for the final push up to the SPA town of Monchique to overnight in the cosy hotel " Refugo da Montanha".
Day 5: Monchique - Santa Clara easy 35 km with an optional extra loop of 11 km
Leaving Monchique in a northerly direction the route drops down the hillside on a metaled B road zig zagging through the woods to the village of Nave Redonda - an excellent lunch stop.
A mainly flat section follows past the hamlet of Saboia onto Santa Clara lake where we will spend the night. An extra loop of 11 km takes riders up to the main dam where there is a first class state run restaurant.
Day 6: Santa Clara - Odemira 30 km undulating ride
From Santa Clara the route continues in a northerly direction through a typical Alentejo landscape of cork oaks with black pigs grazing on the acorns. Passing Luzianes the route turns east through the rolling hills and up into the county town of Odemira on the river Mira where we will spend the night at " Residencial Idálio".
Day 7: Odemira - Milfontes 30 km undulating ride with an optional loop of 11 km around Troviscais
Heading north out of Odemira on the E.N. The route passes over sun set bridge which has a great picnic spot by some waterfalls and onto São Luis where the route turns east over the hills and back into the river Mira valley to the town of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Returning the bicycles at the Casa da Eira to spend the night and explore this estuary town.
Day 8: Your tour is complete after breakfast with optional transfers to Faro / Lisbon airport.
