Our guide on Pura Vida is Paulo Valle, a former Costa Rican XC and DH Champion and passionate rider. Paulo has discovered and linked many of the trails in his country including the Cerro de la Muerte trail from the country's second highest peak at 3,470 meters (11,384 ft) where we will gaze down on the Pacific on our right and the Atlantic on our left before dropping in. In 2006 Wade Simmons co-guided with Paulo to make a truly over-the-top trip. Watch for Wade or another pro rider for our 2007 trip. Translated into English, pura vida simply means pure life. Grab you DH bike and full-face helmet and come live with us, Costa Rica style.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1 – Arrive in San Jose, transfer to resort

Pick up at the airport and transfer to La Condesa Mountain Resort, a sweet hotel with a tasty buffet breakfast and sweeping views of San Jose. Upon arrival we’ll set up our bikes and depending on how the group is feeling, maybe we’ll go out and sample the Costa Rica nightlife. Most flights from North America arrive in the late evening or early morning (the red eye).

Day 2 – Ride Monte de la Cruz and Volcan Barva

After a good gallo pinto (Costa Rican breakfast), we’ll head out for a few warm up runs at the Monte de La Cruz trail: a short but technical single track that ends with fast double track. In the afternoon after a quick lunch on the road, we will drive up to the Volcan Barva one of the volcanoes of Central Mountains. From there we will make a half an hour singletrack descent through coffee plantations to our hotel. Again tonight, we’ll stay at La Condesa Mountain Resort.

Day 3 – Ride La Carpintera

Today we will drive just outside of San Jose to the south of the city to a privately owned mountain littered with steep trails in the jungle. After a day of epic shuttles, we’ll roll back to the city and stay at the Hotel Milvia, a small historic cottage-style boutique hotel and art gallery with a ton of character. This place is unreal. Tonight it’s dinner on the town.

Day 4 – Ride Volcan Irazu and La Chonta in Dota

This morning we’ll ride from Costa’s highest active volcano at 3432 meters. Often, the volcano can be seen smoking…don’t worry, the last eruption was back in 1963. Today’s ride will take us from the edge of a crater, where we can look into the 300-meter deep hole before plunging down the slope on our bikes for a 7000-foot descent on singletrack, doubletrack and rough road. In the afternoon we’ll ride the Dota Valley – amongst the highest peaks in Costa and famous for having one of the best soils on the planet to grow coffee. Riding in this area means riding deep rain forest, thick jungle with incredible views. Tonight we stay at Cabinas Doña Cecilia, a small home style Inn in the beautiful town of Santa Maria, with the best food in town.

Day 5 – Ride Providencia

Today we will leave the town of Dota, heading south in the search of bigger mountains…which we will find. On the next two days we will go down Costa Rica’s longest single track trails: Providencia and the Cerro de la Muerte (Peak of Death). We will start our ride from the main road that goes all the way south to Panama. From this road we will descend for 13 kms on a tropical cloud forest singletrack to the town of Providencia. Tonight, we’ll stay at the Savegre Mountain Hotel, a beautiful resort nestled in the high mountains.

Day 6 – Ride Cerro de la Muerte

Today we will ride down from Cerro de la Muerte, Costa Rica’s second highest peak at 3,470 meters (11,384 ft). The ride begins at considerably high elevation where the vegetation offers a particular configuration of small shrubs and trees known as Paramo Ecosystem. After descending about 400 meters of very technical terrain, we will then cross timberline and start enjoying the tropical cloud forest with amazing large oak trees all covered by moss, abundant wildlife, and incredible views. This is a descent of a lifetime. Again tonight we stay at the Savegre Mountain Hotel.

Day 7 – Ride Santa Eduviges

Today’s ride is a new trail that starts from the same spot as the Cerro de la Meurte descent, but heads towards the town of Santa Eduviges instead. This ride is big, remote and epic! Hang on tight. Again tonight we stay at the Savegre Mountain Hotel.

Day 8 – Transfer to San Jose

After a leisurely morning we’ll drive back to San Jose and pack our bikes. Depending on how the crew is feeling, we might rip up and spin another lap on La Chonta on the way. Tonight we stay at the La Condesa Mountain Resort and celebrate with a night on the town!

Day 9 – Fly home

Transfer to airport, fly home. Or, head to the beach for those who are!
