Purple and emerald moorland, heather-clad mountains, forests, and sprightly streams where salmon leap offer us a romantic realm for our rambling. And we visit the Scottish capital, Edinburgh - the "Athens of the North" - and Stirling, where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned in 1543. We walk alongside shimmering lochs and across hillsides where castles stand silhouetted as reminders of long-ago battles between feuding clans. Trails lead us westward to the fantastically indented coast and to ferries bound for the islands – Kerrera, Mull and Ulva – blue-grey jewels on the horizon.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1: Edinburgh

Rendezvous in Edinburgh for our Introductory Talk and Welcome Dinner. Allow time to absorb the atmosphere of this most cultured of cities. Perhaps visit the Royal Yacht Britannia or browse the shops on busy Princes Street.

Day 2: Drymen

After breakfast, we set out to explore the Old Town and relive some of its history as we walk from the great Castle along the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holy Roodhouse. We leave the capital and head to Stirling for lunch and a tour of the Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned in 1543. We continue to Drymen and our hotel in the heart of Scotland's finest nature park.

Day 3: Drymen

We walk out of our hotel and onto the West Highland Way to explore the shores and hills of the Eastern side of Loch Lomond with views of the awesome peak of Ben Lomond towering above.

Day 4: Oban

We travel to Loch Etive one of the country’s most handsome sea Lochs. Tracks lead us into the uplands and along the shores of the black lochs. After lunch, we continue to our lodging in Oban, an important ferry-port and an interesting town to explore on foot, pausing for a "wee dram" of malt whisky at the local distillery.

Day 5: Oban

We take a ferry across Oban Bay to the unspoiled Isle of Kerrera where the few local residents and the abundant wildlife live in harmony. On the rocky west coast we visit haunting Gylen Castle, the ancestral home of the Clan MacDougall, before heading back to the Oban ferry along a track with panoramic views of the town and surrounding islands.

Day 6: Tobermory

We cruise to the legendary Isle of Mull. Our morning walk takes us to an Iron Age fort with far reaching views of the Sound of Mull to the East and Loch Keal, summer home of the Mitford sisters, to the West. After lunch near Salen, we stroll into Tobermory, the picturesque capital of Mull, passing cascading streams and waterfalls tumbling into the ocean.

Day 7: Tobermory

We spend today exploring the remote Isle of Ulva, population 30, seeing a 9th century Viking fort and, hopefully, red deer and golden eagles. We return to our hotel in Tobermory for our Farewell Dinner.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast, we visit Torosay Castle, home of the James family and one of the former homes of the Campbells, the Dukes of Argyll. We return to Oban by ferry for our transfer to Glasgow.
