This workshop will be of special interest to
novice paddlers who wish to acquire the skills and
experience that will enable them to begin tripping
on their own.
We will start off with a day spent at our meeting
point at Mississagi Lake Provincial Park
going over some of the basics. We will then head
out on a 4 day canoe trip through a
series of very scenic lakes. All our
trips are slow paced and allow ample time for
photography, sketching, writing, hiking,
exploring or just plain relaxing.
We can expect to see a wide variety of wildlife
including: moose, beaver, otter, marten, as
well as many types of land birds and water fowl.
We may even be lucky enough to hear the
mournful cry of the wolf at night as there are a
few of them in the area.
Some of the subjects we will cover are...
Basic strokes and their usage.
Equipment selection, packing and
waterproofing strategies
Map and compass reading and open
water navigation.
Fire making, meal planning and
preparation.
Efficient portaging techniques.
Ecologically sound no trace camping
practices.
