Our off-road motorbike tours take in the towering peaks of the High Atlas Mountains, the plunging gorges and palm-fringed oases of the Saharan fringe, the broad open deserts and vast dry lakes of the Sahara itself, and the empty white beaches of the Atlantic coast. We offer a selection of different itineraries – to suit all preferences and experience.
Our leisurely tours out of the pretty fortified coastal town of Essaouira on the Atlantic. Ideal for those with experience wanting to combine their favourite sport within a holiday with non-biker friends and family, or for the less experienced wanting guidance and tuition.
The Moroccan Beach Run Tour – 4 days off-roading from the vibrant city of Marrakech climbing 2800m passes over the spectacular High Atlas Mountains, through the fertile Souss valley and the Argan forests indigenous only to this area, and on to the wind swept Atlantic coast, to end up with a day off at the coast in Essaouira, before transfer back to Marrakech.
7 day Desert Tour – 5 days biking in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, to Morocco’s highest cathedral dunes which we attempt to bike to the top of, (124m) and then out across the desert with its’ vast dry lakes and sandy riverbeds. A night out in the total silence of a desert bivouac is a highlight of this tour.
9 day Desert and Atlas Mountain tour – 6 days biking with a day to recuperate in the middle. Combining traversing the High Atlas Mountains over 2800m passes, through gorges and valleys to the Middle Atlas in the north, then down south again to get some dune and sand riding and a night in a desert bovouac.
Dune Special – 10 days of Dunes, dunes and more dunes! Three nights in desert bivouacs at the foot of the dunes. This tour was originally searched out by us for Cyril Despres and his friends. Only for experienced sand riders!
We are currently investigating our Dakar tour for January 2008, and will be offering two tours next year with Cyril Despres guiding and giving riding tips and advice on how to bike in the sand and dunes. We also plan to organise another tour with Patsy Quick.
Itinerary for our 9 Day Desert and High Atlas Mountain tour - 6 days biking + 1 day off:
Day 1: Arrive Ouarzazate airport and transfer to 4* hotel in the town
Day 2: (approx. 250kms) Breakfast. Final briefing, fueling of bikes and departure for Tineghir. Only 15kms on road, before taking to pleasant winding, sandy trails - ideal for you to get accustomed to your bikes - across a wide open plateau with distant views of the mountains. 50kms on, its up through the "Valley of the Roses" and the southern foothills of the High Atlas for a further 70kms to our picnic lunch spot at Boulmalne de Dades. After this, for those who want more, 96kms off-road into the Jebel Sahro, considered some of the most beautiful mountains in Morocco, or for those who prefer to take it a bit easier on the first day, there is the possibility of travelling with the support vehicle, 55kms by road to Tineghir, to our 4 star hotel with swimming pool.
Day 3: (approx. 250kms) Leaving after breakfast we head for the High and Middle Atlas. The first 50kms on road visiting the Todra Gorge with its 400m high vertical walls (if you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of the solitary cliff climbing goat that lives up there somewhere!). On to the village of Ait Hani where we rejoin a well maintained piste for about 65 kms passing through many local villages and then climbing up and over a 2800m pass and on to the village of Agoudal and its fertile valley. A short 20kms on road, we then take to the trails again, winding in and out of the riverbed, and through beautiful cedar forests to Tounfite where we refuel before continuing to Midelt - the fossil center of Morocco - via either the Cirque de Jaffar, a very narrow, high sided, rocky gorge, or across the "Arid Plateau". Dinner and accommodation in a 3* Kasbah style hotel. We are now in the Middle Atlas.
Day 4: (approx. 320kms) 10 kms on road, then across an arid plain in the northern foothills of the High Atlas to where we join a very little used winding mountain track; the scenery is stunning and the tracks awesome. As we descend on the southern side we ride for about 20kms along the riverbed, passing through many beautiful gorges. With the High Atlas behind us it’s a 130km fast blast across the desert. Rocks, sand, washouts, dunes and palmeries are all encountered on the long hot ride into town where the cool drinks await us by the swimming pool of our 4* hotel at Erfoud. Buffet dinner.
Day 5: Day off to relax by the pool, have a massage, turkish bath, or take a taxi into the village - for those looking for Moroccan purchases and souvenirs and a bit of local culture! Lunch by the pool. In the late afternoon, you could rent a 4x4 with driver to take you to the dunes at Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, where you could walk to the top of the highest dune (124m) to watch the sunset. Buffet dinner at the hotel.
Day 6: (approx. 120kms) - Breakfast and early start across the desert on piste to Erg Chebbi where we will try to reach the top of the highest "cathedral" dune (124m) on the bikes. After lunch of a typical couscous we set off into the Sahara desert, across flat, dry lakebeds, and winding sandy trails towards our nights stop. Dinner and accommodation in a typical berber jaima (tent), situated close to a large area of smaller dunes (max. 80m). In the late afternoon/early evening, once the sand has cooled down, fuel permitting, we might go and bike some more in the dunes or take a walk to the top and see the sunset. Dinner.
Day 7: (approx. 190kms) - Breakfast and early start across the desert towards Zagora. Flat, dry lakebeds, deep sandy riverbeds, winding sandy trails, plenty of "fesh fesh" (bull dust) and some rocky pistes. Dinner and accommodation in 3 star French owned hotel styled on a Moroccan kasbah.
Day 8: (approx. 190kms) Leave for Ouarzazate. Morning spent biking on narrow tracks through the Draa Valley palmeries. (90kms). Then a further 50kms on twisting trails through valleys and riverbeds, finalizing the tour with 50kms on road over the Tizi-n-Tichka pass with its spectacular scenery. A late lunch is taken at the snack bar beside the pool in our hotel.
Day 9: Transfer back to Ouarzazarte Airport.
