The first day we go by bus to the highlands of the Sprengisandur desert where we spend the night at a mountain cabin with a natural hot pool. Next morning we set off to the East Glacial River and we will follow its course for the next two days. We will experience exciting white water rafting combined with magnificent landscape. In the afternoon of the third day we come back to Varmahlið where we will enjoy the hot pool before we end the tour by barbecue dinner.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: The group gather together in Varmahlið at 14:00h in the afternoon. From there, we are taken by bus up into the highland desert of Sprengisandur. We spend the night at Laugafell, a mountain cabin situated not far from the source of the river. A relaxing soak in the thermal pool at the cabin will help you to get a sound sleep before the next days' adventure.
Day 2: After breakfast we set off to the river. The first hour or so gives the participants the chance to synchronize their paddling. The next 4-5 hours are a real test of the rafter's skills, as we go on an exciting wild water ride! At the end of an eventful day, we pull ashore and have a well-deserved dinner and rest at a cosy mountain cabin.
Day 3: Today's route will take us through Austurdalur valley, and down through the East River's magnificent gorge. The ride down the gorge gives you a splendid opportunity to admire its rugged beauty, in between the action and excitement of running the rapids. At the confluence of East Glacial river and the West Glacial river, we hit a stretch of calm water, ideal for swimming and winding down after the day's excitement. We end the tour in Varmahlíð where it started, by relaxing in the thermal pool and barbecue dinner before saying our goodbyes.
What to bring:
We recommend warm, light, layered clothing, made of wool or fleece material, and warm underwear. Bring two changes of underwear, warm socks (wool or thermo). and a thin cap to wear under the helmet. Neoprene gloves are available at the boat house. Please bring a sleeping-bag, and don´t forget swimsuit and towels for the hot pool. Please keep in mind that during the rafting, equipment and luggage are brought along in the boats. All unnecessary luggage can be left in the bus and brought back from Laugarfell.
