The biggest and best-known of the caves at the Cradle of Humankind is Sterkfontein, where over 500 hominid fossils and over 9 000 stone tools have been found. It was at Sterkfontein that two major finds were made, that have changed modern paleontology:
The Australopithecus africanus Mrs Ples (now believed to be a Mister Ples), dating back 2.5-million years and Little Foot, an almost complete ape-man skeleton 3.3-million years old.
A local guide will take you through a tour of the Sterkfontein Caves after which you can visit the small museum on the site.
Take note:
* Duration: 3-4hrs
* The inside of the caves have no fossils on display
* Entrance and excite to caves is by stairs. Should you experience a walking disability, please note that you might find it difficult to join the tour into the caves.
Notes:
Airfare is not included in the tour price.
