As the original colonial capitol of former British Honduras, Belize City is teeming with historical significance most adequately depicted in the sleepy charm of its oldest buildings, most of which have been refurbished as key landmarks. As home to the country’s sole cruise ship port, The Belize Tourist Village, the city is one of the most accessible and intriguing tour destinations.
The Belize City Tour embarks from the Tourist Village on a comfortable air conditioned ride through the bustling city streets via a ride over the famous Swing Bridge, the only remaining manually operated bridge in this hemisphere and entrance to the southern portion of the city. Upon entering the downtown area, visitors come across a colorful display of fruit stalls and shops flogging selling everything from clothes to plastic containers and electrical devices. A number of historical landmarks are situated towards the end of Albert Street, the central orifice of the downtown area, including the magnificent St. John’s Cathedral, the country’s first Anglican Church, the elegant Governor General’s Mansion, now transformed into an informative museum showcasing the rich history of the former capital, and the Yabra Cemetery where many of the earliest settlers are buried.
This was once the prison of BelizeParade promenade which connects Newtown Barracks to the Fort George area brings visitors to the site of the city’s most famous landmark, the well-preserved Baron Bliss Lighthouse and tomb of the revered Baron Bliss who left his fortune to the country of Belize. Other points of interest that lie within the immediate vicinity include the Chateau Caribbean Hotel, formerly the nation’s first hospital, the Memorial Park, constructed to honor war veterans, and The Radisson Fort George Hotel, one of Belize’s oldest and most esteemed accommodation facilities.
After over an hour of extensive sight-seeing the Belize City Tour disembarks at The Belize Tourist Village where visitors can grab a quick bite to eat or purchase a last minute souvenir before departing on their voyage.
