Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Depart USA, Arrive to Rio de Janeiro. Depart USA to Rio de Janeiro. Your flight includes meals, drinks and in-flight entertainment for your journey. Transfer independently from the airport to your hotel or choose an optional transfer.
Day 2: Rio de Janeiro. Enjoy a full-day at leisure in Rio de Janeiro. (B)
Day 3: Rio de Janeiro. Day at leisure, or enjoy an optional tour to Petrуpolis, the Imperial City of Brazil. Located 40 miles southeast of Rio de Janeiro, Petrуpolis is nestled among the wooded hills of the Serra dos Уrgгos National Park, in the valley of the Piabanha and Quitandinha Rivers. First settled by the Germans, the city keeps the memory of the nation's first monarch, Emperor Dom Pedro I, alive and well through its architectural heritage and charm. Visit the Imperial Museum, former summer residence of the Brazilian Emperors. This pink Neoclassical palace is home to many historical artifacts and furnsihings of the Imperial family, the most famous of them being the Imperial Crown and Scepter of Emperor Dom Pedro II. Interestingly, however, visitors of the museum must wear felt slippers so as not to damage the rare jacaranda wood floors. Continue to the Neogothic Cathedral where lies the tombs of Emperor Dom Pedro II, his wife Empress Teresa Cristina, Princess Isabel and her husband Conde d'Eu. Visit the Crystal Palace, originally erected in France as an orchid greenhouse, and then imported and mounted in Brazil. The shelter was brought by Princess Isabel's husband to house her flower exhibitions and balls (1879-84), a structure which is still used today for concerts, exhibitions and the Festa do Colono Alemno (Festival of the German Settlers). Day 4: Rio de Janeiro
Enjoy a full-day at leisure, or choose an optional tour of Guanabara Bay with lunch. Appreciate Rio's unique regional setting from the sea, including it's historical buildings and the forts protecting the Guanabara Bay, built by the Portuguese in 1555. Enjoy views of Sugar Loaf Mountain, one of Rio de Janiero's most frequented attractions, as well as Copacabana Beach and Corcovado ("Hunchback") Mountain, whose 2,330 foot peak is graced by the famous 125 foot Christo Redentor, "Christ the Redeemer" statue. Sail from Niteroi Beach, and make a stop for swimming or sunbathing amidst some of the most splendid surroundings in Rio. Be sure to bring your swimming suits and towels. Lunch will be at Marius Seafood Restaurant, before a return by bus across the Niteroi Rio Bridge. (B)
Day 5: Rio de Janeiro
Morning at leisure, or join an optional tour to Corcovado Mountain, located in the Tijuca Forest National Park, the largest urban forest in the world. Begin in Cosme Velho's neighborhood from where the cog train ascends the Tijuca Forest to the summit, where lies the famous Christo Redentor, "Christ the Redeemer" statue. The towering Art Deco style statue stands 125 feet high, overlooking the city below. Though notions for erecting a large religious symbol atop Corcovado circled since the mid 1850s, it was not until 1921 that those notions were openly acknowledged by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro. From the statues high, enjoy panoramic views of Rio such as Sugar Loaf Mountain, Guanabara Bay, the beaches of the Southern Zone and the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon ($39). In the evening, you may choose an optional night tour of the city, including a Brazilian barbecue Churrascaria dinner and samba show. (B)
Day 6: Rio de Janeiro
Spend the morning at leisure, or enjoy an optional tour of the Tijuca Forest National Park by open jeep. The Tijuca, which covers some 20 miles of Rio's urban landscape, is a hand-planted rainforest, home to a vast variety of exotic plants and wildlife found only in the Atlantic Rainforest region. Known as the "Green Spine of Rio," the forest contains several significant sites including Cachoeira dos Macacos (Monkey's Waterfall), Taunay's Waterfall, Chinese View, the large granite Emperor's Table and the Mayrink Chapel, with painted murals by Candido Portinari. Walk an easy trail to view tropical trees and fruits as well as a variety of monkeys, birds and butterflies. In the afternoon, you may choose an optional drive along the famous beaches of Rio to Praia Vermelha (Red Beach). Take a cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain for an unrivaled view of Copacabana Beach and the Santa Cruz Fortress. (B)
Day 7: Departure
Transfer independently to the airport for your departure flight or choose an optional transfer.(B)
