DAY 1. Arhanes
After a welcome raki toast, we walk to Fourni, an ancient Minoan cemetery.
DAY 2 Arhanes
Knossos, the Archaeology Museum in Herakleion, museum to Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek.
DAY 3 Zaros
Zaros, famous for its mineral water and fresh trout. Morning cycling and an afternoon hike in a gorge.
DAY 4 Matala area
Minoan Phaestos whose still undeciphered Phaestos disc, dated 1700 BC, is the earliest printed document in the world. Swimming in the sea.
DAY 5 Rethymno
Cycling through mountain villages culminating in charming Spili with its dazzling fountain of 19 lion heads.
DAY 6 Rethymno
Rethymno is alluring with the Fortessa, the old Venetian fort. A bike ride to Melidoni Cave which has a deep history for Cretans.
DAY 7 Hania
Colorful and romantic Hania with Venetian and Ottoman influences, fine shopping and harbor side meals.
DAY 8 Omalos or departures
8 Day participants can either cycle to Omalos or depart depending on departure times. 12 Day participants ride to Omalos to reach the Samaria Gorge
DAY 9 Agia Roumeli
Descend the incomparable Samaria Gorge, said to be Europe’s longest gorge.
DAY 10 Soughia
A visit to Lissos, a remote Ascleption healing site in Crete with nearby Roman tombs from a later era. Follow the Libyan Sea coastal path.
DAY 11 Loutro
4 hour hike along the coast stopping at a Byzantine Church on the walking path.
DAY 12 depart for Hania airport
Those having an evening departure can spend the day hiking the Aradena Gorge.
