Your role as a student:
During the first week, the morning and late afternoon excursions are conducted on foot, whereas the remainder of the course alternates between walks and driving. You will be expected to participate fully in all activities and work as a team with your fellow trainee rangers. The course includes bush navigation, basic ecology, animal tracks and tracking, 4x4 driving skills, animal behaviour, rifle handling, game drives and walks and astronomy.

Where the project is based:
The camp is on the bank of a river in a 33,000 hectare game reserve to the west of Phalaborwa. Camp accommodation is simple tents with shared bathroom facilities. There is a communal area where all participants gather for meals and lectures. There is a good chance of seeing white rhinoceros, lion and elephants as well as other game species.

The trip in November 2007 starts in one reserve for 1 week before transferring for the next 3 weeks to a neighbouring reserve. This should give you the opportunity to see and learn more during your stay.

Please book your flight to arrive into Johannesburg (airport code JNB) before 11am on the advertised arrival date to ensure your airport pickup. Schedule your return flight for after 6.30pm on the advertised end date to allow you time enough to return to the city.

Notes:
Airfare is not included in the tour price.

This project offers a really rare opportunity for students to experience bush life whilst gaining a detailed understanding of their surroundings. The basic training course is perfect for those who want to break into a career in eco-tourism, or simply for people who want to really get to grips with the South African environment. This hands-on project will also allow people to see African wildlife up close in their natural surroundings. All programmes are accredited by the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa.
