Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Welcome to Bulgaria!
Arrival and overnight in Sofia. Bulgaria's capital and the largest city is the country's modern centre of political, economical, social and cultural life, but is also among the earliest European settlements, with remains dating back to the Neolithic Age.
Day 2: (250 km) The Capital of Bulgaria
Sightseeing in Sofia. The Boyana Church (on UNESCO list since 1979), with wall-paintings dating back to 1259, is among the first Bulgarian examples of Renaissance artistic style. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.
Day 3: (100 km) The Second Bulgarian Kingdom
Veliko Tanovo, the capital of the Second Bulgarian State during the 12th. 14th centuries, hosts the remains of the Medieval Fortress which, at the time, sheltered the capital. Nearby Village of Arbanassi is an architectural reserve that has some of Bulgaria's best churches. Etara, the only Bulgarian open-air ethnographic museum, has a number of authentic workshops from the 19th century where craftsmen still employ skills and techniques of more than 100 years ago. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.
Day 4: (250 km) The Founding of the Bulgarian State
Veliki Preslav, situated in the vicinity of Shumen, was one of the first capitals of the newly established Bulgarian State. Also in the Shumen region, is the Madara Horseman (on UNESCO list), which is a sizable 8th century inscription, reproduced on the back of most current Bulgarian coins. The Stone Forest is a unique natural phenomenon in the Varna region. Overnight in Varna.
Day 5: (300 km) Bulgarian Coastline
Varna, often referred to as the sea capital of Bulgaria, holds the world's most ancient gold artifacts, more than 7000 years old. Transfer to Nessebar by the coastline road. Nessebar Old Town is on the UNESCO list since 1983. This centuries-old town hosts over 40 churches and numerous houses from the Bulgarian Revival period. The day's delight is the sea food lunch. Overnight in Kazanlak.
Day 6: (120 km) Valley of the Roses
The town of Kazanlak is better known as the capital of the Valley of the Roses. Bulgaria has an annual yield of about one ton of rose oil, used in virtually every high-quality perfume around the world. Kazanlak is also the home of the Kazanlak Tomb (on UNESCO list). Bulgaria's second largest town of Plovdiv hosts an ensemble of houses from the Bulgarian Revival period built next-door an antique Roman amphitheater and various churches. Overnight in Plovdiv.
Day 7: (332 km) Bulgaria's Largest Spiritual Center
The Rila Monastery (on UNESCO list since 1983) is the largest and most significant Bulgarian monastery. It is a safe-keeper of the sacred relics of St. Ivan of Rila, the monastery's founder and patron. The day's delight is the trout lunch. Overnight in Sofia.
