Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival at Sofia Airport. Transfer to the hotel and accommodation. Sofia city tour. Lunch. Folklore dinner. Overnight at a 4* hotel in Sofia.
Day 2: Departure for Melnik the smallest town in Bulgaria, situated in the most South West part of the country. This is one of the most distinguished wine regions in Bulgaria with specific climatic characteristics similar to those in the Mediterranean region. The famous red wines produced from the local sort of Shiroka Melnishka Loza/grown only in Bulgaria since ancient times/ are full-flavoured and rich in taste and acquire pleasant exotic touches with ageing. Most of them are home-made and you will have the chance to taste a fine selection at a local wine cellar /which used to provide wines for Winston Churchill himself/ and to learn more about wine growing in the region. These include 3 red and 1 white wine.
Lunch at a local tavern with home-baked bread, home-made yoghurt and grape mash dessert. A walk to the near-by 15th century Rozhen monastery with its unique refectory. Transfer to the town of Bansko Bulgaria's premier mountain resort. Dinner and overnight in Bansko.
Day 3: Departure for Plovdiv Bulgaria`s second largest town, aged more than 6 thousand years. Sightseeing tour of the old quarter an open-air museum town with 18th century houses. Accommodation, free time, lunch. In the afternoon transfer to the village of Brestovitsa, located in the Thracian lowland in the Southern Bulgarian wine region. Here is the home of famous "Mavrud" a local variety grown only in this region of Bulgaria since ancient times. Local wines are rich of fragrance, dense, with the fresh fruit taste known as "The New Taste", so popular on the world market.
A unique opportunity to find out all about this exquisite variety by visiting a famous local wine cellar. An unforgettable experience including wine tasting of 5 different red wines with appropriate appetizers and a tour around the cellar accompanied by lecture on the varietals, myths and legends, wine producing technologies and wine storage methods. A folklore program and dinner with local cuisine specialties to complete this exceptional evening. Overnight in Plovdiv.
Day 4: Full-day trip from Plovdiv to near-by Bachkovo Monastery the oldest monastery in Bulgaria, famous with its 17th century murals and wood-carved iconostases. Tour of the monastery wine cellar and tasting of rakhia traditional Bulgarian strong alcoholic drink, produced by the monks. Departure for Perperek village more than 3500 years old and situated in the Rhodope mountain believed to be the home of mythic Thracian artist Orpheus. Visit of Perperikon archaeological site believed to be a sanctuary of mythic god of wine Dionysus Bacchus. Lunch picnic in the open, surrounded by the beautiful nature of the Rhodope mountain. Dinner and overnight in Plovdiv.
Day 5: Departure for the town of Veliko Tarnovo capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in the 12th century and home of the Patriarchal Church and royal palaces. Lunch in near-by Arbanassi village 15th century architectural preserve. Departure for Liaskovetz village, situated in the North Bulgarian wine region.. Typical for the region are wines from the Gamza variety, with ruby color and pleasant red berries flavor. Wine tasting of 5 different wines from a rich selection of 1 dry red and 2 dry white wines, a dessert wine and sparkling herbal wine with appetizers at a local winery. Dinner and overnight in Veliko Tarnovo. After dark attending the famous Sound and Light show a thrilling audiovisual spectacle with hypnotizing sound and light effects, the historic Tzarevets hill being the natural décor.
Day 6: One-day trip to the town of Targovishte in the Black Sea wine region. Here mostly white wine sorts are grown. The main variety here is the highly praised Traminer. In this region high-quality dry and semi-dry wines are produced, combining pleasant fruit flavor, solid taste and elegant freshness. Visit to Targovishte Winery for wine tasting of 5 white wines, 2 red wines and one sparkling wine with appetizers, and lecture on wine growing traditions in the region. Lunch at a local restaurant. Return to Veliko Tarnovo for a folklore dinner and overnight.
Day 7: City tour of Veliko Tarnovo. Visit to the 15th century Troyan Monastery, lunch with local specialties and tasting of rakhia typical Bulgarian strong alcoholic drink/, produced by the monks from the famous Troyan Plum variety. Departure for Sofia. Dinner and overnight at in Sofia.
Day 8: Sofia departure. Based on the flight schedule, opportunity for a trip to near-by Vitosha mountain with lunch at a panoramic restaurant.
