Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Depart from Durban and drive north following the route of Lord Chelmsford column just prior to the invasion of Zululand on 11 January 1879. Our route takes us through breath-taking scenery and we overnight either at a quaint little lodge perched on the edge of the cliffs at Helpmekaar where hospitality is warm and generous or in the luxury lodge nestled into the cliffs overlooking the battle site of Isandlwana.
Day 2: We meet up with our trail ponies and after a short ride through farmland high on the Helpmekaar plateau we wind our way down to Rourke’s Drift, following the route the supply wagons would have taken during the build up before invasion. We transfer back to our accommodation by vehicle for the night, to enjoy sundowners on the verandah as we watch the changing light on the views before us.
Day 3: We now ride a second set of ponies along the invasion route taken by the British army from Rourke’s Drift to Isandlwana. After lunch we discuss the battle of Isandlwana before driving back to Rourke’s Drift for an account of the defence of that depot, just on the Natal side of the Buffalo River. Once again we return to our lodge for the night.
Day 4: We return to Durban, visiting places of interest en route.
