Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces. This is Big Game Country, the setting for dozens of sanctuaries teeming with wildlife and birds. Among them, the Kruger National Park is world renowned, as are several of the luxurious private reserves on its western boundary. The Kruger Park was established in 1898 to protect wildlife and covers an area of 2 million hectares. Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Apart from the irresistible magnet of this wildlife mecca, some spectacular scenery can be viewed in the mountainous area known as the Panorama Route, en route to the Kruger Park.
Blyde River Canyon (Panorama Route):
On the three-day package, both nights are spent in the Kruger National Park and on the four-day package, you spend one night on the scenic Panorama Route with its waterfalls, forests and Gold Rush towns and two nights in the Kruger National Park. On the five-day package you spend two nights on the Panorama Route and two nights in the Kruger National Park.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Mpumalanga Province
We collect you from your doorstep and depart to Mpumalanga Province formerly known as the Eastern Transvaal. On our way to the first stop, in the trout fishing village of Dullstroom, we travel through Witbank and Middelburg to Belfast where we leave the highway. After Lydenburg we go down the escarpment of the Drakensberg mountain range. We spend the afternoon in this scenic region with its waterfalls, lookout points and picturesque villages. We visit the historical mining town of Pilgrim's Rest, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels and the Blyde River Canyon. We overnight in Graskop/White River/Hazyview or Blydepoort. (DB)
Day 2: Kruger National Park
We leave after breakfast for the Kruger Park and spend the day in this world-renowned reserve. We check in at a rest camp (Skukuza/Lower Sabie/Satara or similar) in the late afternoon and have dinner in the camp's restaurant. Accommodation is in thatched-roof rondavels (chalets/bungalows), all with private en-suite bathroom facilities and air-conditioning. (DB&B)
Day 3: Kruger National Park
Another day to try and spot the elusive Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino). We dine and stay overnight in a rest camp. A night drive on an open vehicle with a National Park’s Board ranger is optional (but very exciting). (DB&B)
Day 4: Kruger National Park
After breakfast we go on one more game drive before leaving the park and then head for the Escarpment again around noon. Shopping and sightseeing are on the menu before heading back to Pretoria/Johannesburg. We will be back at around 18:00. (B)
