Namibia must rate as one of Africa's greatest birding destinations: fantastic game watching, numerous desert birding endemics, sweeping scenery and a very high standard of accommodation, to boot!
Our trips combines the Namib desert experience (we'll have breakfast atop a huge red dune while looking for Dune Lark) with the huge contrast of the verdant Okavango Delta in Botswana where we'll search for Pel's Fishing Owl along forested backwaters in the swamps. We'll also spend a few days in the world famous Etosha National Park, one of the most spectacular game parks in Africa.
We make an extra effort to stay in comfortable, sometimes luxurious accommodation, that keeps us as close as possible to the best birding areas - we even had the near-endemic and elusive Hartlaub's Francolin on front of our rooms while brushing our teeth one morning on a tour last year! All our previous trips have seen all the endemics and near-endemics, including Herero Chat.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1, 22-Apr-08: Arrive in Windhoek early morning and meet up with your Birding Africa guide (Windhoek).
Day 2, 23-Apr-08: Drive across Namib to Walvis Bay (Walvis Bay).
Day 3, 24-Apr-08: Birding around Walvis Bay, including the red dunes (Walvis Bay).
Day 4, 25-Apr-08: Drive from Walvis Bay to Omaruru (Omaruru).
Day 5, 26-Apr-08: Birding around Omaruru (Brandberg).
Day 6, 27-Apr-08: Omaruru to Hobatere. Night drive at Hobatere (Hobatere).
Day 7, 28-Apr-08: Birding around Hobatere (Hobatere).
Day 8, 29-Apr-08: Etosha National Park (West-Etosha NP/surrounds).
Day 9, 30-Apr-08: Etosha National Park - Central. Game drive at Etosha (Etosha NP/surrounds).
Day 10, 1-May-08: Etosha National Park (East-Etosha NP/surrounds).
Day 11, 2-May-08: Explore Etosha in the morning before heading to Rundu (Rundu).
Day 12, 3-May-08: Rundu to Shakawe, via Mahango (Shakawe).
Day 13, 4-May-08: Birding around Shakawe (Shakawe).
Day 14, 5-May-08: Shakawe to Popa Falls (Popa Falls).
Day 15, 6-May-08: Shakawe to Waterberg (Waterberg).
Day 16: 7-May-08: Waterberg to Windhoek. Fly out of Windhoek.
