Quito is characterized by being the first World Cultural Heritage City by UNESCO for its spectacular preservation of Colonial Architecture and its past - residing in the midst of the modern.

But Quito hides many things including the flavors and aromas of one of the oldest traditions of its ancestors. These flavors and aromas haunt the most special and spectacular corners of this wonderful city. The tradition of sweet gastronomic delight welcomes even the most casual visitor. Many of these shops are known to locals, but are far off the “tourist track.” We know about them, we’ve shopped them for years, and now, you can learn about them, too.

In one full, spectacular day, chocked full of surprises, Quito’s Sweets Tour brings you to what can only be classified as the Sweets of the Gods. Baking is an early chore. Bakers want to complete it before oncoming heat of the day, and they know they must make bread and pastries available early for mealtimes. We will begin our day very early from the hotel towards our first stop, where we will visit one of the oldest bakeries in Quito. We will have the opportunity to be present at the manufacturing site of the famous "Quesadillas,” sweets made from cheese which is actually the derivation of the name.

But this bakery does not only produce quesadillas; it also produces a variety of sweets such as aplanchados, moncaibas, melvas, and other delicacies which you will find lurking there. Calories take a vacation as we surrender ourselves to mouth watering pastries, prepared in ways perfected over generations. Samples are available for the asking and each stop lets you walk away with a “goodie bag.” But wait our day is only beginning and this is just the first of many surprises on this tour.

We will travel to the deep Southern section of Quito through streets and neighborhoods unique to tours until we arrive at our next stop the famous “Dulces Tradicionales de Quito” a very familiar micro - enterprise with over 80 years of tradition.

Here, you will have the opportunity to both taste and witness the making of the exquisite “manjar de leche,” “turrón de maníi,” “dulce de guayaba,” and the traditional “borrachitos.” After this exclusive visit available only on the Sweets of the Gods Tour, it’s time to learn more about the secrets of the “Mistelas.”

This is a very interesting sweet and even more interesting is the production process. The inventors from Colombia have lots of stories to share. You will be delighted by several flavors with some containing alcohol, including either whiskey or rum.

Our tour takes you to private homes to meet famous people. Learn during your own Cooking Class with one of the best Chefs in Ecuador and be a guest in his personal home, where he will teach us how to prepare the famous “Humitas” and “Quimbolitos.” When you’re not learning to cook, take the time to appreciate the fantastic view which no one else enjoys of the city of Quito.

As we tour back to the center of Quito, to the Plaza de San Francisco, we recognize the famous structure, but this Church is not the attraction today. Your visit today is to what it conceals-- a place just a few meters from the Church.

One of the traditional candy producers we visit is Luis Banda Jr., a third generation maker of a peanut candy confection called “Colaciones”. Despite earning a university degree in engineering, he decided to continue the family business, making sweets the traditional way, using his grandmother's secret recipe. Before ending the day’s amazing experiences, we will share and enjoy a late lunch.

Knowing that many sweets have been sampled along the way during the day, we will invite you to try several Ecuadorian dishes in very small portions. At meal’s end, we will invite you to a demonstration of the production process of the famous Ice Cream “Helado de Paila.” Surely, this trip is a sweet lover’s paradise—aptly named the “Sweets of the Gods” Tour.
