Get to know the cultures and different African traditions that make South Africa so rich with diversity. Interact with local people in places like Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelisha, the biggest township in the Western Cape.
* Langa
- Community school/crèche, interact with the community pupils and the school authorities. Here you get to see the community school setting.
- You can also visit Sangoma (traditional herbalist) this is optional. Sangoma plays a crucial role in the community in providing herbal remedies for various ailments and most people prefer getting their health issues handled by her than going to medical practitioners.
- Shebeen (traditional bar). Her you are treated to various brands of local brews, one of them popularly known as Umquomboti. Tasting this local brew is optional.
- Drive through Gugulethu to Kyayelisha. While driving through this settlement you able to have a glimpse of the beautiful country side. In Gugulethu you are able to see how people conduct themselves, (their lifestyle), characterized by heavy drinking early morning engaging in petty businesses alongside the roads and roasting enjoying meat (popularly known as braai).
Khayelitsha (largest township)
- Stop over mama Vicky’s restaurant and visit B and B Hotel. Mama Vicky is very popular lady in the area because of she is the pioneer of a big community project aimed at feeding the vulnerable community children. B and B Hotel offers catering services in the community and most tourists prefer having meals at this ‘popular spot’. She also offers lodging facilities. She is very willing to share with visitors the history, culture and tradition of the indigenous people around.
- As you drive around this township you experience the spirit of “Ubuntu” community spirit. People are very friendly and are always eager to interact with visitors in the area. You can talk to them ask whatever question and they are willingly respond.
- Walk about with host to see the beautiful countryside, including housing, and the lifestyle.
- Socialize with locals by interacting with them. Here you can share with them a few jokes, engage in some conversation and the like.
- Welcome drinks at Shebeen (local bar). In the Shebeen you are treated to local music, have a taste of local brew (optional) and get to learn more about their culture and tradition.
