Ride the world famous mountain bike trails of the Rotorua redwoods. Mountain bike one of the Kiwi classic, the 42nd Traverse a 4-5 hour epic cross country ride in the remote Tongariro forest on old logging tracks and back country trails, then a challenging "secret single track" on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Depart Auckland 8.30 am, coach via Hamilton to Rotorua. After a coffee to get you going, spend three hours riding Whakarewarewa redwood forest single tracks, some of the best purpose built mountain bike trails in New Zealand. We then travel the thermal highway to Taupo, on the North Island's Central Plateau, along the way, swim in a natural hot river, visit Huka Falls and if your keen, throw yourself off the 47 meter bungy over the Waikato river (price not included). Travel south around Lake Taupo to the central plateau, home of New Zealand's volcano's. Dinner at a local restaurant or country pub.
Day 2: Hope you didn't overdo it yesterday ! Today is an epic mountain bike adventure. We ride the 42nd Traverse, a 4-5 hour grade 3 mountain bike adventure, riding the old logging trails and single track, through the remote ranges of the Tongariro forest. This area can be very isolated and exposed, if you choose to bring your own mountain bike it must be well serviced and reliable, alternatively ride one of our Planet Kiwi supplied Specialized full suspension bikes. Riders should have extra clothing and rain jacket (see what to bring). Your guide carries tools, spare parts, map, compass, food, lights, first aid kit and survival blanket. When we finish we load up and coach to the Coromandel Peninsula.
Day 3: Coromandel Secret Single Track mountain bike a grade 4 intermediate + ride, "our favorite trail", 3.5 hour technical single track on an old gold trail in the heart of the Coromandel mountains, visit an old abandoned gold mine. Big climbs, fast technical downhill and some difficult sections. Visit a secluded Coromandel beach and relax awhile before we return to Auckland and the end of your adventure.
