The mountain lakes and alpine meadows of the Pyrenees are ideal for those that like relaxed days in the mountains, discovering stunning, secluded spots. Expect spectacular views of high peaks, clear streams and waterfalls and the valleys to ourselves as we discover some of the regions hidden treasures. Don't forget your camera!
Guided Walking
This tour includes five days fully guided walking. We personally guide all of our tours meaning that you get a bilingual guide who is knowledgeable about the local area.
Flora
The Pyrenees are justifiably known as the 'flower garden of Europe'. There are spectacular displays of wild flowers - particularly in early summer - and this tour will take you to some of the best spots. Our guide is very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and the relaxed pace of this tour gives us plenty of time to discuss the wildlife.
Walking Grade
This is a week of gentler walks with the emphasis on finding quiet, beautiful spots with breathtaking scenery rather than scaling high peaks. The walks will not be overly strenuos and will follow good paths with gradual gradients. You should expect days of between four to seven hours walking.
Accommodation
You will stay in the family-run, two star, Hotel Casa Maorlans in the village of Panticosa. Three course evening meals are taken at the hotel restaurant each evening, apart from on your rest day when we visit the local town of Jaca to try some of the best tapas of the region.
Tour Itinerary:
This is a sample itinerary - we'll try to stick to this as closely as possible but the exact routes will depend on the weather and what the group would like to achieve.
Day 1: Arrive in Panticosa. If you haven't hired a car we collect you from either Zaragoza airport or train station (there are excellent train connections to both Madrid and Barcelona).
Day 2: Ibon de Piedrafita. Nestled under the high cliffs of the Sierra de Partacua this splendid mountain lake gives superb views across the Valle de Tena.
Day 3: Villages of the Serrablo. A walk linking several medieval villages - each with it's own 11th century Romanesque church.
Day 4: The Ordesa Valley. A World Heritage Site the Ordesa Valley is an undisputed highlight of the Pyrenees. Our route follows the Rio Azaras, past waterfalls and rock pools before the woodland gives way to spectacular views of the surrounding cliffs and the peak of Monte Perdido at the head of the valley.
Day 5: Rest Day. Free day to relax in Panticosa or visit one of the local attractions such as the Parque Faunistico. In the evening we visit the lively town of Jaca to take a look round the citadela and 11th century cathedral before tucking into some traditional Spanish tapas.
Day 6: San Juan de la Pena. The cliffs above the monastery of San Juan de la Pena are home to many griffon vultures. This walk takes us above their roosts and gives us a great chance of seeing these huge birds up close. After the walk we have a chance to visit the fascinating 10th century monastery built under an overhanging cliff and the burial site of many of the early kings of Aragon.
Day 7: Punta del Pacino. A beautiful ascent through woodlands and orchid filled meadows. The peaks position at the center of the valley gives panoramic views of the Valle de Tena and the surrounding peaks.
Day 8: Transfer back to Zaragoza airport or train station.
