Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrive Charleston / Georgetown, SC
Welcome to South Carolina, and a tour which enables your family to help another family in need. Upon arrival in Charleston, you will be met and transferred to your home for the next five nights. The Historic Downtown District has stood throughout Charleston’s history as the cultural capital of the South and is considered by many to be a living museum, with a wonderful variety of things to do and see.
In this beautifully preserved city you can experience tours through historic landmarks, including 18th century homes and plantations, the Battery, museums, churches and the city market. The number of historic sites in Charleston South Carolina is astonishing. Charleston also boasts numerous art galleries that display the city’s impressive appreciation for the visual arts. You’ll meet the rest of your team at tonight’s Welcome Dinner and Project Orientation. Includes: (D).
Day 2 & 3: Habitat for Humanity Project
After breakfast, we’re off to work. Here, Habitat for Humanity Partner Families are low-income working families in the community. They are required to make a down-payment, contribute 500 hours of “sweat equity” and pay for their home through an interest free, nonprofit mortgage. They come from all walks of life and through Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, will become first-time homeowners. And for the next two days you are a past of this wonderful endeavor! Day 4: Charleston Tour
After Breakfast, we’ll enjoy a fascinating and informative walking history tour of Charleston. With centuries of history bursting from alleys and street corners, Charleston’s historical sites are too numerous to list. Everywhere you turn in the downtown, there is another story to be heard or another building to be explored. Enjoy lunch on your own, and explore the famous market. Then, we’ll head to the Battery for a cruise to Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began.
The tour is fully narrated and explains many points of interest and historic significance. You will learn about the major events which led to the outbreak of America’s most bloody war. At Fort Sumter National Park, historians will provide detailed information about Fort Sumter and its pivotal role in the War between the States. There is a museum with fascinating exhibits and a small gift shop for your enjoyment. Tonight, roll up your sleeves and dig into some great Barbecue at Sticky Fingers! Includes: (B), (L).
Day 5: Charles town Landing / Drayton Hall
Breakfast, before we visit Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. Here a group of English settlers landed in 1670 and established what would become the birthplace of the Carolinas colony, the plantation system of the American South, and one of the continent’s first major port cities. And here the story is still told.
Then, we’ll tour Drayton Hall, which occupies 630 acres of pristine southern land. The estate was completed in 1742 and today remains in nearly original condition with no running water or electricity. The house, in Georgian-Palladian architecture, was constructed over four years by European and African American laborers. This is the only plantation on the Ashley River to endure both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Most others of its kind were burned by the Federal Army in 1865, however it was believed that the Drayton Hall Plantation was a quarantine house and the site was avoided by enemy forces. Tonight’s Farewell Dinner features the best of Southern Cookin’ at Magnolia’s. Includes: (B), (D).
Day 6: Kayak Tour / Depart
Today, after breakfast, we’ll take a “Rivers and Rice Plantations” Kayak tour. This blackwater tour starts on Quenby Creek and twists along the historic banks of Quenby Plantation. Journeying through abandoned rice fields of wildflowers, we paddle on to the East Branch of the Cooper River where wooden barges once floated rice, cotton and indigo out to the Charleston Harbor. Here we view bald eagles, hawks and wetland shorebirds for miles overlooking the abandoned rice fields, often accompanied by the American Alligator, this tour is truly, one of our paddlers favorites. Then it’s time to head to the airport to catch your homeward flight. Depart, taking with you warm memories of a very special tour! Includes: (B).
