The horse riding is laid on by a Basotho operator, Ntate Jakob, who sources his horses from the local community. He is a very experienced riding guide, and assures us that even the novice and inexperienced rider will feel at ease on the Basotho ponies which he uses. These animals are a breed found only in Lesotho – short, stocky, sturdy and extremely sure-footed animals. We overnight in village type accommodation on all the trips, thereby spreading the benefits of tourism as widely as possible within the local community.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: This tour starts as for the 2 and 3 day trips, After lunch by the river, we have time for a visit to the highlands town of Mokhotlong. Overnight at Molumong Lodge.
Day 2: Set off on horseback after breakfast for a full day of riding. Superb scenery and atmospheric villages fill the day. Stay the night in a motebo or shepherds dwelling on a high ridge.
Day 3: Follow the high ridge through soaring mountain scenery as we approach our goal, Thabana Ntlenyana, at 3482m the highest point south of Mount Kilimanjaro! Sit on top of southern Africa for lunch, then start the journey back. Overnight in traditional rondavel accommodation in a village.
Day 4: Return on horseback to Molumong Lodge for lunch before setting off on the journey home. Time permitting, we stop off for a drink at Sani Top Chalet, reputed to be the highest pub in Africa. Return to Sani Lodge by around 4.30pm.
Note: This tour is for the experienced horse rider as it entails 2 1/2 long days in the saddle! Accommodation in the motebo is very basic and warm sleeping bags are required.
