Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival at the Douala International airport, reception and transfer to hotel, brief description of Cameroon, proper explanation of tour by guide. Dinner and night at the Foyer du Marine Hotel.
Day 2: Early wake up, birding on the mud flats at the Douala port, breakfast and drive to Yaoundé by road to get an evening train for Ngaoundere. Along the Douala-Yaoundé road, we make stops at river Sanaga in Edea where we will do some birding. Expectations are Preuss’s Cliff Swallows, Black Kites, Senegalis Kingfisher, Weavers and Grey Pratincole to name a few. We get to Yaoundé in four hours and book an overnight train, where we will have bedding provided, but we take along our own food and drinks onboard.
Day 3 and 4: We arrive in Ngaoundere, have lunch and transfer to the Ngaoundaba Ranch for two nights. The ranch is an old hunting lodge situated besides a dormant volcano overlooking a Crater Lake. We will bird in marsh land, open lake, woodland and gallery forest. In all these habitats, we will expect to see the following; Snowy-crowned Robin Chat, Purple Glossy Starling, Western Grey Plantain-Eater, Marsh Tchagra, Blue-Breasted Kingfisher, Dybowski’s, Brown Twin-Spots, Schlegels Francolin, Brown-Chested Lapwing, Western Violet-backed Sunbird, Black-Capped Babbler, Ross’s Turaco, Grey-Winged Robin Chat, Puvells Illadopsis and many more.
All the birding will be around the ranch property on foot and will require some moderate hiking and climing. We will also do some night birding around the lodge. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Ngaoundaba Range Lodge.
Day 5: Early wake up and breakfast in Ngaoundere and continue for a long drive to Maroua. We will bird on the way stopping at Lake Dang.
Dinner and overnight at Relaise Porte Mayo.
Day 6 and 7: We start with an early morning breakfast and continue north to the Waza National Park, where we will spend two nights. On the way we will expect to see Rock Loving Cisticula, White Crown Cliff Chat, Red-tailed Lavender Waxbill, African Swallow-tailed Kites and others. Arriving at the Campement we will have lunch and then bird late afternoon in the Park. While in the Waza National Park we will see Short-toed Snake Eagle, Hoopoe, Abyssinian Roller, Helmeted Guineafowl, Bateleur, Wooly-Necked Stork, Namaqua Dove, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Four-banded Sandgrouse, Little Green Bee-eater, Black Scrub Robin, Viellot’s Barbet, Black-crowned Crane, River Prinia, Sahel Paradise Whydah and many more.
The next day, we leave early for birding the Park where a park ranger will join us. We will be using the car to travel into the park and there is also a very good posibility to see large mamals. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Campement de Waza.
Day 8 and 9: Early morning birding around the Campement and drive to the Benoue National Park making stops for birding on the way. We expect to see Lesser Blue-eared Starling, Senegal Parrot, Long-tailed Glossy Starling, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, Black-bellied Fire Finch, Bustard and many others. We will stay at the Campement in Benoue Park, which is surounded by a Miombo-like forest. Here we will expect to see the Adamawa Turtle Dove, White-Crested and Violet Turaco, Egyptian Plover, Spur-Winged Lapwing, African Wattled Lapwing, Grasshopper Buzzard, Emins Shrike and others.
After arrival we will drive and bird on the way to the Hippo pond on Benoue River. The next day we bird the road sides to the Campement with the posibility of walking into the park with an armed ranger since you will find large mamals here. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Campement de Buffle Noir.
Day 10: We will bird the shores of the Benoue River early before breakfast and departure to Ngaoundere and the overnight train to Yaoundé.
Day 11 and 12: Arriving in Yaounde late morning and will drive to Kribi and bird on the way. After breakfast the next day we bird around Kribi and return to the hotel early afternoon to relax by the ocean. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and overnight at Residence Jully hotel.
Day 13: Early breakfast and drive to Douala birding on the way. In Douala we will bird the mud flats behind Foyer du Marine, do some shopping and farewell dinner before escort you to the Douala International Airport for your return flight.
This tour can be extended to cover the South West and Bamenda Highline Region of Cameroon.
