Machias Seal Island is the most reliable accessible location in the U.S. to see Atlantic Puffins, where they nest along with Razorbills and Arctic Terns. We will see them close up and personal, so close that you can see the color of their toenails and hear them walk across the roof of the blind. Common Murre and Gray Seal are also excellent possibilities on our morning boat trip. Land-based birding near Machias and Moosehorn NWR will feature boreal nesters: Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied and Olive-sided Flycatchers, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, and Philadelphia Vireo. Red and White-winged Crossbills are both likely, as are a number of warblers including Cape May, Blackburnian, Bay-breasted, Blackpoll, Wilson's, and Canada. We'll either take the new ferry to Yarmouth, NS and back for a day of pelagic birding, or spend additional time in coastal, upland, and boreal habitats, in search of all the breeding birds that northern Maine has to offer.
