During this trip we place a special emphasis on providing opportunities for you to listen to, and learn about, bluegrass music as it is played in natural river canyon settings. Imagine quietly appreciating tunes played by a local bluegrass band as they resonate in natural amphitheaters; or the high energy beat and swing dancing on sandy beaches around the campfire. The bands vary from year to year, but they are consistently good, some are even nationally known bands on their way to play at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Although rafts limit some of the instruments that can be brought, most acoustic pieces come along, as Adrift provides special dry bags and takes extra care in packing to ensure a safe voyage for instruments and guests. This is a bluegrass and river runners delight!
You start your musical whitewater boating adventure in the remote northwestern part of Colorado about 85 miles west of Steamboat Springs ski resort. Here the Yampa River, the last major free-flowing tributary of the Colorado River system, roars through a colorful canyon maze with canyon walls towering 2,000 feet above the river, containing rock strata spanning a geologic time period of one billion years. This weathered sandstone gorge is a remote, pristine wilderness in the heart of Dinosaur National Monument, one of the unknown jewels of the National Park system. During early summer when runoff from high mountains fills the channel, the Yampa provides over 40 intermediate to advanced (Class III) rapids along with one of the big drops in the west, Warm Springs rapid (Class V). The rapids are fun, but there are also plenty of opportunities to serenely float past the canyon walls and observe bighorn sheep and golden eagles. Numerous natural alcoves, amphitheaters and narrow side canyons provide idea locations for your outdoor acoustic bluegrass concert.
Since the canyons are roadless, we bring all food and gear on the rafts to undeveloped camps each night. When rafting you have three boating options to choose from, and you can stay with one type the entire trip or switch at any time. Choose between a paddle powered raft where you grab a paddle, and with the assistance of a guide who sits in the back, maneuver the boat through the rapids as a team; or select an oar powered raft where you just sit back and let the guide do all the work. Another option is to run the rapids "on your own" in a 1-person inflatable kayak with a support raft drifting nearby (wetsuit required). Several of these easy-to-use boats are provided per trip and they are shared by all participants. If you desire a kayak for your own personal use the entire trip, you must request it in advance.
Adrift provides transportation from the meeting place to the start of the river trip, and then back to the Adrift Adventures store at trips end. Professional guides and all boating related equipment are provided, including one watertight duffel bag per person to carry personal gear. All meals from first day to last day lunch are included, and we offer vegetarian alternatives. No previous rafting experience is required. Minimum age is 16.
Weather in the early summer can be highly variable with afternoon highs in the 60's to 80's, and lows from 35 to 50. Sunshine dominates but you need to be prepared for occational showers.
We offer a 5 day Bluegrass, Banjos, and River Boats trip on the Yampa River in early June and a 4 day trip on the Green River in late August. Both are designed especially for persons who love bluegrass music, rafting fun rapids at peak river flows, and the sublime beauty of western wilderness canyons. During this trip we place a special emphasis on providing opportunities for you to listen to or learn about, bluegrass music as it is played in natural river canyon settings. If you are a picker here is a great place to play and share with others.
