Casa Xelaju, an institute of cultural studies, based in Austin, TX, is sponsoring a Holy Week tour of Guatemala from March 30 through April 6, 1999. The tour will include visits to sites of historical, cultural and religious significance in the Central American country. Among the highlights of the trip are the following: a stay in Quetzaltenango, where the tour group will participate in Holy Week processions and festivals around the city; day trips to the towns of Salcaja and Cantel to tour the oldest church in Central America and a blown-glass factory; and a visit to the colorful indigenous market in Chichicastenango. The tour package also includes boat visits to towns along Lake Atitlan, Antigua, Guatemala, educational lectures, and visits to museums and churches.
Your Itinerary
Day 1:
March 30, arrival to Guatemala. We will stay at Hotel Aeropuerto and dine there that evening.

Day 2:
March 31, breakfast at the hotel restaurant. We arrive in Quetzaltenango at noon. Tour students will be
checking in at hotel. Early in the afternoon, a tour to the city's historic, tourist and commercial sights is
scheduled. At the end the tour, a lecture about
Quetzaltenango will be given at our building.

Day 3:
April 1, a day trip to the following towns:
1.) Zunil, where we will visit a women's coop and San
Simon, a Mayan Saint.
2.) Cantel, to see a blown glass factory and
3.) Salcaja to tour the oldest church in Central America
and Textile Factories. In the afternoon, we will have a
lecture about Semana Santa and Mayan religion in
Quetzaltenango by a Mayan Priest.

Day 4:
April 2, we will be participating in the Semana
Santa processions and church's festivals all over the
city.

April 3, We leave for Panajachel where we will visit several towns around Lake Atitlan. We will stay in
Panajachel.

April 4, leave Panajachel to visit the colorful indigenous market in Chichicastenango. In the afternoon
will be leave for Antigua, Guatemala and will stay overnight.

Day 7:
April 5, tour of the city to visit historical sights and churches. A lecture on Spanish colonialism will be
held afterwards. The rest of the day is free time.

April 6, we leave Antigua, Guatemala to go to the airport for flight back to your country.
