16 day tour of the Amazon: Miami, Manaus, Tabatinga, Leticia, Iquitos, Yacumama Lodge, Iquitos, Lima, Miami. Extensions available.

Your Itinerary

Day 1:
Wednesday: Depart late evening from Miami International airport on your direct flight aboard LAB (Lloyd Aero Boliviano) to manaus (Brazil).

Day 2:
Upon your early morning arrival at Manaus International airport you will be met by your local transfer person outside the customs area who will transfer you to the hotel TROPICAL. This 5 star hotel is located just ouside the city of Manaus on the banks of the "Rio Negro" river. Check into your room for some rest. Enjoy the morning hours at your own pace. in the early afternoon depart on a city tour which includes views of the Central market, the floating dock area, down-town Manaus and a drive by the famous Opera House and Rio negro Palace. Return to hotel TROPICAL for the night.

Day 3:
Friday:
Morning at leisure to enjoy the hotel's pool, small zoo or maybe stroll the waterfront of the Rio Negro. Prepare for the early afternoon boat transfer from the dock at hotel TROPICAL to the Ariau Jungle Towers.

THE ARIAU JUNGLE TOWER is a unique structure located at the confluence of the Rio Negro and Ariau Creek some 35 miles up river from Manaus. It is completely built at the level of the rain-forest canopy. More than 3 miles of catwalks
allows visitors a most intimate encounter with the flora and fauna of the mid Amazon region. The area is considered one of the most biologically diverse
regions known to man.

Upon arrival at the Ariau check into your comfortable room, located in one of the towers and explore the grounds. Enjoy your dinner and your first evening in the Amazon rain forest.

Day 4:
After your breakfast depart at around 09:00 am for a Jungle trek through the surrounding forest. Your professional guide will explain about life in the
forest and the flora and fauna found in the area. Return to the Lodge for lunch and some rest. At 03:00 PM. depart by motorized canoes to explore the river. A stop will be made to visit the houses of natives living near the lodge. After dinner yet another trip on the Ariau creek by boat, this time to spot the Amazon alligator.

Day 5:
Early wake up call for a sunrise tour before breakfast. 08:00 am. Board the boat for your return transfer to the hotel TROPICAL in
Manaus. The day can be enjoyed at leisure. Overnight at hotel.

Day 6:
After breakfast transfer from the hotel to the airport in Manaus for your VARIG flight to Tabatinga (Brazil). Upon arrival in this small border town you will be greeted by your guide who will transfer you across the border into Leticia, Colombia's Southernmost city located on the Amazon river. Check in at the hotel ANACONDA. Enjoy the rest of the day exploring the city. The cities
ethnic museum is conveniently located only one block away from the hotel and the local zoo is in walking distance. (B)

Day 7:
At around 09:00 am your guide will walk you from the hotel to the waterfront where you will board your expedition boat which will take you on your full day tour to Bellavista, a small Ticuna Indian settlement, located on the Cayaru river. Travel up the Amazon and into a fascinating area on the Peruvian side of the Amazon river. Here you will enter a small tributary, the Cayaru river. The area is excellent for bird watching while pink river dolphins can be spotted almost year round. A picnic lunch will be taken along on this trip.
Return to the hotel for overnight.

Day 8:
Late morning transfer from the hotel in Leticia to Santa Rosa, located opposite Leticia and Tabatinga on the Peruvian side of the Amazon river. Here
you will board the M/V RIO AMAZONAS.

The M/V RIO AMAZONAS was built in the late 1800's in Scotland. After following a long career as a cargo/passenger ship on the Amazon river it was completely rebuilt in 1981 to enable the international traveler to experience the Amazon
in basic comfort.. It was again refurbished in 1994. She carries 44 passengers in 21 air conditioned cabins on an itinerary which explores life on the Amazon river and its people. The ship has been designed as an informal cruise ship.
The major public rooms on the M/V RIO AMAZONAS - the dining room and library - are air conditioned. There is ample deck area, both covered and uncovered, with comfortable deck chairs and hammocks for a leisurely look at life on the
river. Upper deck cabins all have private bath / showers and picture windows for a perfect view of the river. Two lower beds with reading lamps and a small writing desk and chair complete the cabins' furnishings. Sun deck cabins are slightly larger, have two twin beds, a third bed, a small closet and a chair.

After a short briefing by the ship's cruise director check into your cabin for an early afternoon sailing. If possible, lunch will be served on board. Time permitting there will be a late afternoon, or early evening, shore excursion.

Day 9:
In the morning you will make a trip by small launch up the Ataquari river. Here we will fish in a small back-water lake returning to the ship for lunch. An afternoon stop at the remote leper hospital of San Pablo with time to browse in the primitive 'gift shop' which sells patients' handicrafts. Night exploration by launch up the Mayaruna river to listen to the night sounds of
the jungle and look for the Amazon caiman.

Day 10:
After a short stop at Pijuayal for a document check, the ship will turn up the Ampiyacu river for a visit to Pevas, oldest Peruvian town on the Amazon river, and a group of Yagua natives. Here you will be able to trade manufactured goods for native handicrafts.

Day 11:
The ship will arrive at the Iquitos dock in the early morning hours. Your local guide will transfer you to the hotel DORADO, located near the main square in down town Iquitos. After a few days on the river and exploring the rain forest, a stay in Iquitos is a welcome change. An afternoon city tour of Iquitos will give you the opportunity to get to know this friendly town. The tour includes a visit to the floating market at Belem and the museum. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 12:
After breakfast transfer from the hotel to the dock where you will board the boat for the five hour ride up the Amazon river to the Yacumama lodge deepinto the upper Amazon Jungle.

The Yacumama Lodge is considered the most remote lodge in the upper Amazon surrounded by pristine forest, rivers and lakes. It features canopy access and exploration from its 115 foot jungle tower and sky-line which provides excellent opportunities the observation of the local Amazon flora and fauna. Accommodations at the lodge are provided in private bungalows with flush toilets. The lodge is "eco-operated" with solar power, composting and organic farming.

The lodge is located on the Yarapa river, a remote tributary of the Amazon river. Lunch will be served upon arrival followed by an orientation and a late afternoon jungle excursion. Night activities are optional or you may enjoy the
charming and spacious main lodge before retiring to your private bungalow for overnight.

Day 13:
An early morning departure from the lodge by boat & trail to the 115 ft. ground based canopy access tower. Experience the sunrise over the jungle with
excellent opportunities to view bird life and primates. Return to the lodge for breakfast followed by a walk on the "Medicine trail". Wildlife viewing include a wide variety of botanical and insects, leaded by your Yagua Indian
guide. After lunch board your boat for an excursion to view the rare Amazon Pink Dolphins".

Day 14:
Return to the Jungle tower for wildlife viewing from 9 canopy levels. For the truly adventurous sail from the tree to tree on the Canopy skyline - designed and constructed by the creators of the canopy rigging in the Sean Connery movie "Medicine Man". Afternoon choice of activities include boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking or relax in the hammock room over the river. Evening excursion by boat to view the wildlife. (B, L, D)

Day 15:
Morning at leisure at the lodge. After lunch you will board a speed boat which will return you to the city of Iquitos where you will arrive late afternoon. Upon arrival at the dock, you will be transferred to the hotel DORADO. The remainder of the day and night will be at leisure. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 16:
Thursday:
Early transfer from the hotel to the airport for your Aeroperu flight to Lima which will connect with your return flight to Miami where you will arrive in the afternoon.
